Volunteer Reading Helper

About the organisation

Our client believes that reading opens the door to a brighter future. That's why they train volunteers and equip them with the tools to provide one to one reading support to children aged 3 - 13 who may need regular reading encouragement and help finding enjoyment in books.

Their volunteers work with children virtually or face to face giving them regular support to increase their self-confidence and enjoyment of reading, providing them with the vital skills they need to succeed in school and life. These volunteers transform the lives of the children they support, turning them into confident, passionate and able readers.

About the opportunity

Our client provides one to one reading support to children so they can make friends with books and develop a lifelong love for reading. Becoming a reading helper is a great way to make a difference to a child’s life and enjoy a rewarding volunteering experience.

Our clients simple method helps;

  • to motivate and support a child to feel more positive about their own reading
  • to check and deepen the child’s understanding
  • to have fun with books in a way that enriches and enhances a child's learning

What are we looking for?

You don’t need any specific qualifications connected to working with children to become a reading helper. All volunteers are subject to safer recruitment checks and must attend our clients initial training either online or at a venue before being matched to a school opportunity. Ongoing support and resources are available from the team, along with tools to connect with other volunteers and opportunities to advance your reading helper skills with e-learning and further development training.

Our client needs you to have a passion for working with children and giving them the best possible chance of improving their confidence and literacy, as well as being fluent in both spoken and written English.

Applicants are also required to:

  • Provide two suitable referees
  • Provide ID documents to carry out an enhanced DBS check
  • Complete the required initial training and selection processes
  • Comply with safeguarding policies and procedures
