We welcome applications from every part of the community and we don’t discriminate against any gender identity. We’re especially interested to hear from underrepresented groups in the DfT such as gender diverse, BAME, LGBT+ and disabled candidates.

Are you a strong communicator with excellent stakeholder engagement skills?

Do you enjoy leading and delivering projects at pace and to a high standard?

If so, we would love to hear from you!

Job description

This is a exciting role where your work can have real impact! You will be working with industry stakeholders and Whitehall minister to prepare briefings to cabinet officers on security matters protecting UK waters across the world.

The UK has a dynamic maritime industry with a highly privatised and liberalised ports sector and world leading clusters of maritime professional services . The global shipping sector carries over 80% of world trade, the volume of which is expected to double by 2030. The Maritime Security Division works to protect the United Kingdom’s ports by making them secure, provides support and advice to the shipping industry and protects British maritime interests overseas.

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our team, someone who can help shape our cross-cutting agenda and deliver on policy development to tight timescales. Our work involves bringing together a wide range of stakeholders so we want a candidate that can make effective decisions considering all points of view, is able to demonstrate leadership and manage a number of conflicting demands and competing priorities.

The successful candidate will lead a range of dynamic work packages for example leading the Divisional international engagement programme, and collaborating with cross-Whitehall partners, industry, and the wider Department to deliver maximum impact in our key priority areas.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

•Working closely with colleagues in DfT, across Whitehall and with industry to identify and respond to maritime security opportunities

•Leading the development of an ambitious security policy programme, developing radical options and effective delivery plans

•Implementing recommendations from Maritime 2050

•Coordinating high quality briefings and correspondence related to your policy area, sometimes in high stakes crisis response scenarios

•Working as part of a crisis response team in the event of an incident, sometimes with no notice

Please review the Job Profile for further details on responsibilities.

About you

To be successful in the role you will need to have experience of effectively establishing relationships and working collaboratively with a wide variety of colleagues and representatives, both internal and external, to support complex policy development. You will be able to review data to make reasonable conclusions and decisions and bring a strong understanding of how department strategies fit with wider domestic and international ambitions, for example on security matters to protect UK waters internationally. Also, you will be highly adaptable and open to change to deliver multiple outcomes on time and to a high standard. We also require the successful candidate to have experience of communicating succinctly with good attention to detail and delivering key messages and important information.
