Job description

The Maritime & Coastguard Agency has started an ambitious transformation programme to bring data to the heart of what we do. We are currently building a new Data and Analytics team to deliver new capabilities across the organisation, making use of the wealth of data that we capture to better inform our decisions and future strategy.

We are looking for an Associate Data Analyst to operate within our Southampton based MCA team. You will be responsible for demonstrating the value of data to the organisation through analysis and visualisation to derive new insights. You will teach and inspire others across the MCA through demonstration of best practice for data analysis and providing technical leadership for our community of self-serve reporting users.

Responsibilities

• Deliver a wide range of visualisation and analytical projects that solve organisational problems and create valuable insights.
• Understand and utilise a variety of statistical methods for all aspects of data analysis, applying theory to practise.
• Create data pipelines to support analytical use cases, including data manipulation, blending, transformation, cleaning and discovery.
• Validate, improve and innovate on our use of analytical tools and techniques.
• Act as an ambassador and champion for data visualisation and analysis, supporting others to improve and interpret data across the MCA.

This is a full-time position with a flexible working pattern. You will sometimes be required to work outside of normal conditioned hours, and to work/travel on official duty within the UK.

About You

The successful candidate will have:

• Excellent quantitative skills and demonstrated analytical ability.
• Familiarity with core statistical functions, including regression, correlation, and significance testing is preferred.
• An understanding of tasks needed to prepare data for analytical use including; data manipulation, blending, transformation and cleaning.
• Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
• The ability to translate data into clear, understandable charts, maps and visualisations, ideally with tools including Power BI, Excel and PowerPoint.
• Confident using large datasets pulled from different sources.
• The initiative to undertake research into a technical topic.
• The ability to deliver technical guidance and training to others.

Due to Covid-19, there is less capacity to complete National Security Vetting checks. Vetting is being prioritised for staff either directly involved in the HMG Covid-19 Response or roles in a limited number of agreed high priority areas.

Therefore, in some instances, following successful BPSS pre-employment checks, the successful candidate may commence employment on the premise that NSV higher security checks will be conducted once normal service levels resume. Should NSV checks prove to be unsuccessful, an alternative role, not requiring NSV clearance, will be identified within the department.

If this is not possible the start date for some campaigns will need to be delayed until vetting has been completed.

New entrants are expected to join on the minimum of the pay band.
