Job Details

We recognise the challenges that people with (multiple) protected characteristics may experience on the job market and in their career progression. We are fully committed to being an inclusive employer and ensuring equal opportunities. We are keen to make our workforce as diverse as possible, and we hope to attract applications from underrepresented groups, including Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) people, people with a disability, and people with gender diverse identities.

The Department for Transport has the second largest portfolio of major projects in Government, with a value of approx. £250billion. The successful delivery of these investments is core to our ambition to connect people and places and is at the heart of the Government’s strategy to support economic recovery following the pandemic.

The newly established Portfolio and Project Delivery Directorate has a vital role to play in driving project delivery excellence. We support project delivery across the Department, acting as a centre of excellence that among other things leads on assurance, building the Project Delivery Profession, and portfolio management.

Job description

Would you like the opportunity to work at the heart of the Departments ambition to improve project delivery and deliver on ministerial commitments.

If so we have an exciting opportunity for a Project Delivery Improvement Lead to join us at Department for Transport (DfT) and we’d love to hear from you! This is a very exciting role, at the heart of the Departments ambition to improve project delivery and deliver on ministerial commitments.

This critical role will have an impact on the success of DfT project delivery for years to come. You will manage PDIP, oversee the behaviours and culture workstream and drive improvements in the way the Directorate communicates with its stakeholders. You will also play a key part in responding at pace to commissions from the centre of Government.

Our story

In April 2019 DfT and the Infrastructure Projects Authority published the Lessons for Transport for the Sponsorship of Major Projects. This was a landmark document that brought together the collective experience from recent transport projects and distilled them into 24 practical lessons that when applied will improve the chances of project success. The main theme in the report was a focus on behaviours, bringing awareness to the many natural human traits that can impinge on project delivery when not addressed. It highlighted the culture that can be created within teams and between organisations to better support project success.

The Project Delivery Improvement Programme (PDIP) was established following publication to embed this learning and bring about lasting improvement to five strategic areas.

Please see the attached role profile for more information about the role.
