About Global Witness

We are facing a crisis: the climate is being destroyed and civic freedoms are deteriorating. Rampant abuse of power is pushing the world to breaking point as governments and big corporations all too often go unchecked in their exploitation of our planet and its people.

Global Witness can’t do this alone. It is only through working alongside activists, campaigners and other civil society groups that we can successfully take on some of the most powerful domestic and global actors propagating corruption, human rights abuses, and environmental devastation.

But, to succeed, we need to embody the principles we fight for.  We must continue to strive for cohesion, solidarity, and inclusion internally and across civil society.  To stay ahead of the curve, we must learn from allies and other social and political movements that share our mission.

Only together can we protect one another and the planet to build a better, more just future.

About the role

You will work in a team of four which consists of programmers and investigators to produce data-driven investigations highlighting environmental abuses and the financial and power structures that enable them.

The work is varied with lots of opportunities to develop new and build on your existing skills.  You will work collaboratively with all our campaign teams to develop investigative leads and gather evidence using a broad range of digital sources, including land records, satellite imagery and social media data.

A lot of your time will be spent undertaking open-source research briefs developed by campaign teams for specific investigations. This will involve searching public records, social media and the deep web for information. Sometimes you will need to request data directly from public bodies using freedom of information requests.

You will also be responsible for helping your colleagues outside of the Data Investigations Team keep abreast of data journalism and OSINT skills that help to enhance their research. You’ll run regular training sessions on some of the fundamentals of data and digital research such as how to use Excel, how to find old versions of websites and how to use Google advanced search.

About you

An outstanding early-career data journalist who is interested in working on investigations that make a difference. With a head for numbers, exceptional open source (OSINT) research skills, you’ll also have a good nose for a story and an eagle-eye for detail.

A highly collaborative individual you’ll have the ability to support a range of people and projects and run training to develop the skills of our campaign teams.

With a diverse range of technical skills and knowledge, you’ll be technically curious and excited about enhancing your analytical skills in this role.

Company

We want justice for those disproportionately affected by the climate crisis: people in the global south, indigenous communities and communities of colour, women and younger generations. We want corporations to respect the planet and human rights, governments to protect and listen to their citizens, and the online world to be free from misinformation and hate.
