We are seeking a driven and motivated individual to join our team within the Dangerous Goods Division in Department for Transport (DfT), this is an outstanding opportunity to join a small team that seek to improve the Dangerous Goods sector across Government. Job description

This role involves contributing to the development and implementation of policy on the international and domestic transport of dangerous goods by road and rail, in line with Government objectives and in support of UK industry.

As a Policy Adviser within the Departments Dangerous Goods Division it will be your responsibility to work with UK industry, other Government Departments and international partners on the development and implementation of the regulations for the transport of dangerous goods by road and rail. In line with Government objectives and in support of UK industry.

Working across these groups, you will be responsible for providing policy support for the Division on new/amended legislation, assisting in the implementation of these regulations and engaging with stakeholders from UK industry. You will run projects across these groups aimed at improving the dangerous good's regime.
 

Responsibilities

Responsibilities but not limited to

- Working with the strategic business manager of the team on specific policy projects aimed at improving the Dangerous Goods (DG) regime.

- Liaising with regulators, industry, other Government Departments and international counterparts on issues and policy relating to the carriage of dangerous goods.

- Acting as account management lead for: Training (general, Driver, DGSA), Documentation, guidance, Risks and KPI management, SQA/DVSA account, DGSA review.

- Possibility of attending UNECE meetings, to support the head of the UK delegation. These take place in Geneva and Berne in Switzerland.

- Working with the Head of the International Team on the Divisions stakeholder engagement strategy.

- Coordinating the team’s corporate memory and retention

- Leading on the delivery of new/updated guidance documents

About you

You are someone that has outstanding communication and engagement skills, being able to draw upon these skills to relay sometimes complex messages to others on a regular basis. Ensuring your message is clear and understood, acting upon feedback to help others to understand.

You have a keen eye for detail so that you can compile, assimilate, distil, interpret and present a strong evidence base from a wide range of types of evidence and opinions to form a sound and compelling base to inform coherent policy making.

Whilst in post there will be an opportunity for you to develop and acquire a professionally recognised qualification in Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor (DGSA), full training will be provided.

Additional information

Once current restrictions are lifted there could be some travel across the UK and internationally involved with this role. This could occur 1-2 times a year, and also some travel to attend meetings in various offices around the UK.

Selection process details

This vacancy is using Success Profiles, and will assess your Behaviours, Strengths, Experience and Technical skills.

If you are successful at sift, you will attend a first stage interview which will consist of a Policy exercise only, this is due to take place from the 5th and 6th of July 2021 If you are successful at the policy exercise you will be invited to 2nd stage video interview, which is due to take place from w/c 19th of July 2021.

This interview could be conducted via a video interview, details of which will be provided to you should you be selected for interview.

The selection process will be designed specifically for the role. As a result, your assessment could include:
• an interview and a policy exercise
