About the job Summary

The FSA is a non-ministerial department of over 1300 people, with a big vision – to drive change in the food system so that it delivers “food we can trust”. Our primary goal is to continue to protect public health and consumers’ wider interest in food. As we have now exited the EU the FSA faces a significant period of change and activity.

The day to day running of any government agency is awash with data of all kinds. The FSA is no different. From the research and evidence that we employ to support and guide our policy work, to figures and private details regarding the food business operators at the heart of our regulatory work, our Agency is built on the data we use to keep our operations running and keep consumers safe.

This data, though vital to the work we do, does present issues. We are duty-bound to ensure that the data we hold is used responsibly and kept in a manner that protects sensitive information. There is a delicate balancing act that is always at play - how does the FSA make the most of its data whilst maintaining responsible protections?

Job description

The Information Governance Lead has a significant part to play in ensuring that data used within the FSA is used responsibly, kept safely and, when requested in accordance with the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act, shared appropriately. Leading a team of four, the position holder will work to embed good practice for information governance across the entire Agency. Seeking to support the FSA’s use of information, the team will represent an authoritative voice that champions data protection whilst enabling the Agency to make the most of the information at its fingertips.

Interweaved with these responsibilities are those relating to the FOI requests received by the Agency. The FSA puts openness and transparency at the centre of what we do, better allowing us to maintain our reputation as a regulatory body. We must seek to respond efficiently to all FOI requests, whilst also ensuring that any data we share is handled responsibly. The successful candidate will work with the relevant parties across the Agency to meet these expectations, providing support and guidance to those responding to requests.

Working with colleagues across the FSA, candidates will need to be strong and confident communicators who can work quickly and resiliently in the face of multiple priorities. You’ll need to have meticulous attention to detail, and be delivery focused. If you are excited to play an important role in data protection within a government agency don’t hesitate to apply for this exciting opportunity.
