Would you relish the opportunity to lead the National Rail Travel Survey , and contribute to delivery of our broader Rail Research programme?

If so, we have an exciting opportunity for a professional social researcher or statistician to join our analytical team, and we would love to hear from you.

Job description

You will join our Rail Statistics, Research and Evaluation (RSRE) team to work on a range of rail-related research and analysis, alongside leading delivery of a major Government survey- the National Rail Travel Survey (NRTS). The NRTS is a ‘census’ of the railways and informs the business cases of large and small rail investments across Great Britain.

For more information on the National Rail Travel Survey .

You will work closely with senior partners, policy colleagues, press office and Ministers whilst leading the NRTS and working on a wide range of interesting research and analysis projects affecting the rail industry.

DfTs’ rail research programme is broad and includes research with passengers to inform the Department’s policy development on diverse topics, including customer experience, fares and ticketing, accessibility and infrastructure enhancements. Our team priorities include informing rail reform following publication of Williams- Shapps plan for rail and understanding rail demand and changes in how passengers use and experience the railways as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Responsibilities

Your day to day duties and responsibilities will include;
• Effective management of the lead contractor delivering the NRTS and other rail research projects, ensuring that projects are delivered on time, within budget and to a high standard
• Project management of the NRTS and other research and analytical projects, ensuring the appropriate legal, ethical, procurement and quality assurance practices are followed
• Contributing to delivery of the broader Rail Research programme, designing, specifying and commissioning quantitative research to inform policy development.
• Managing the dissemination of research and analysis for different partners and audiences.

You will have the option to be either based in London attracting the London pay scale, or in Leeds or Birmingham attracting the national pay scale and occasional travel to attend meetings in London.

About you
You will have a broad experience of working as either a professional social researcher or statistician, with required skills in research and data analysis, including manipulating and interpreting data and presenting high quality analysis in a clear, impactful way to support decision making.

You will have excellent communication skills and the ability to articulate key messages from analysis to diverse audiences. You will engage effectively to build positive relationships within and outside the Department.

You will be proactive and organised with excellent project management skills and a high attention to detail.

Qualifications

Candidates will hold either;
A first or second-class honours degree or postgraduate degree with either 30% social research methods components, OR 25% statistical content (e.g. Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Sciences, Business Studies, Psychology, Geography or similar)
