Responsibilities

Roles Responsibilities include (but not limited to):

• Providing expert technical input to support the development, maintenance and delivery of the Maritime Future Technologies programme/work plan and to enable delivery against the plan. This will include advising on prioritisation of where we should focus our efforts/engagement.
• Creating and maintaining strong links with industry/academia to develop an understanding of the technical aspects of the various emerging technology routes and associated risks, and how those risks can best be mitigated both technically and from a regulatory perspective.
• Building expertise in implementation of new fuels from a regulatory perspective so that technical advice can be given to operators to design and build ships with new propulsion technologies and energy saving measures.
• Supporting the development of maritime regulation (within MCA remit) and engagement with other regulators that have an interest to strategically enable the scale uptake of zero emission technologies to support the Government's ambitions set out in the Clean Maritime Plan.
• Supporting the facilitation of industry stakeholders input to the regulatory update process in light of emerging technologies. Including cases for best practice.
• Providing expert technical input to support development of and provide input to the advisory function with the domestic fleet to support the implementation of low emission solutions.
• Providing expert technical input to support the development of the UK training capability to ensure it is fit for future technologies.
• Providing expert technical input to discussions on Emission Reduction at the International Maritime Organisation.
• Providing expert technical input to and insight to Maritime and Coastguard Agency / Department For Transport and other key government stakeholders on emerging technology that will effect policy and regulation in the future of the shipping industry.
• Engaging in recognised Organisations/Classification Societies rule development.

About You

Coming to us with a core discipline in naval architecture, marine engineering or equivalent technical specialism. You will be an ambitious individual who wants to make a difference, you think outside the box and challenge the norm. You have excellent management skills and always lead by example. Using your brilliant communication style, you are able to relay messages to any target audience with ease, translating technical language for those not technical minded. You thrive in a fast paced and agile environment and are experienced dealing with a large number of diverse stakeholders.

You pride yourself on your exemplary attention to detail. You are a forward thinker and are looking for a role where you can combine your previous experience using new technologies and making the world a better place to be.

To be successful for this post you will have previous experience of project / task management within a commercial setting and have an understanding of safety case approach i.e. HAZID/HAZOP/FMEA.

• Core discipline in naval architecture, marine engineering.
Or, a technical specialism with proven experience of working with emerging technologies.
Or, experience and understanding of the maritime industry from working within a technical capacity in the industry, and can demonstrate an understanding of relevant engineering concepts.
• Desire to work in a fast paced and agile environment.
• Experience of dealing with a large number of diverse stakeholders.

The sift is due to take place from 21st September 2021.

Interviews/assessments are likely to be held from 4th October 2021.

Company

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) is an executive agency of the United Kingdom working to prevent the loss of lives at sea and is responsible for implementing British and international maritime law and safety policy. It is also responsible for land based search and rescue helicopter operations from 2015.

Its responsibilities include coordinating search and rescue (SAR) on the coastline and at sea through His Majesty's Coastguard (HMCG), ensuring that ships meet international and UK safety standards, monitoring and preventing coastal water pollution and testing and issuing Merchant Navy Certificates of Competency (licences) for ships' officers and crew to STCW requirements The organisation is led by Virginia McVea, its Chief Executive, who took up post in February 2023.The MCA are chiefly responsible for the syllabus and national training standards issued by the Merchant Navy Training Board (based at the UK Chamber of Shipping).
