Job description

This role sits in DfT’s Operations Team which manages the Department’s response to civil contingency & security issues.

As an Operations and Response Advisor, you will play a critical part in ensuring the DfT response team and the wider Department are operationally ready to deal with large scale incidents on the transport network. You will be working in a central DfT team and building cross-government engagement in horizon scanning and duty response capability. The post holder will provide critical support across all aspects of the divisions work, covering counter terrorism and civil contingencies.

Additional Information

This role requires flexibility, you will be part of an out of hours rota. In recognition of this, an on-call allowance will be paid on top of your salary.


Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

• Supporting the Department’s operational response incidents impact the transport sector
• Managing and maintaining Standard Operational Procedures (SOPs), ensuring DfT has effective contingency arrangements in place; embedding a more agile and resilient response across the Department
• Horizon scanning for near term risks
• Assisting in major event planning (short and medium term)

About You

We are looking for a well organised and motivated Operations and Response Advisor that is highly adaptable and resilient who would enjoy response or civil contingencies work.

You’ll be confident in your ability to organise, assess information and ensure at every opportunity that all relevant areas of responsibility are delivered for the provision of a high-quality response team can take place without issue.

For this role, it’s essential to be able to proactively manage your workload whilst retaining focus on the key priorities of the role.

You’ll have exceptional interpersonal skills and be able to communicate information to others. You will need to be capable of working at pace and happy to work in an environment where roles might need to be flexible at times.

Selection process details

This vacancy is using Success Profiles, and will assess your Behaviours and Experience.

How to apply

As part of the application process you will be asked to submit a CV and four 250 word behavioural statements for Managing a Quality Service, Changing and Improving, Working Together and Delivering at Pace.

Should a large number of applications be received, an initial sift may be conducted using the lead behaviour, Managing a Quality Service. Candidates who pass the initial sift may be progressed to a full sift or progressed straight to interview.

The sift is due to take place on Wednesday 15th September 2021.

Interviews are likely to be held week commencing Monday 4th October 2021.
