Job description

The Department for Transport's (DfT) Digital Service is a leading-edge government capability that provides digital, data and technology (DDaT) to our users. We were established in September 2017 and deliver a blend of services, primarily to our ministerial department.

DfT works with our agencies and partners to support the transport network that helps the UK’s businesses and gets people and goods travelling around the country. We plan and invest in transport infrastructure to keep the UK on the move.

The Cloud Engineering team is tasked with owning, supporting and developing our cloud infrastructure and application platforms. You will work closely with Live Services Cyber Security, Information Assurance, Architecture and suppliers to develop and maintain our core infrastructure and services. Ensuring they meet all Departmental and Government security standards.
 

Responsibilities

Includes but not limited to;

• Interact with stakeholders across departments and will reach and influence a wide range of people across larger teams and communities. Having the ability to present highly technical information in a confident, clear, concise direct manner to a less technical audience.
• Provide expert knowledge on area(s) of specialism such as (GCP, M365, Microsoft Azure or AWS) leading by example with your technical expertise.
• Take ownership of problems and proactively resolves technical problems. Research and apply innovative infrastructure solutions to new or existing problems.
• Working with DS Architectural team, provide strategic advice on use of cloud services across agreed platforms.
• Monitoring and ensuring agreed quality and service performance targets, resolving operational incidents and problems.
• Provide advice and expertise to other areas of Digital Service on all areas of Cloud Infrastructure and support. Including creating and updating knowledge base articles.
• Being responsible for event management, availability management, capacity management and service asset and configuration management for Cloud Infrastructure.
• Responsible for the execution of disaster recovery activities, including their regular testing.
• Write, Maintain and continues improvements of automation scripts and code in line with best practice.

About You

To be successful in this role you will have experience working in an infrastructure engineering capacity. You will existing experience of using programming languages and have an understanding of cloud based software solutions. We work with cutting edge technology so the ability to be open minded and think creatively is welcome as well as the ability to work well within a team.

DDaT Allowance

• The Senior Cloud Engineer role is part of the DDaT profession and attracts an enhanced pay scale which is mapped to capability levels. The successful candidates starting salary will be determined by performance at interview and assessed capability level. There are two components to DDaT pay - base pay and DDaT allowance.
• The role may also attract a DDaT allowance of up to £10000 The amount, if afforded is determined by several factors one of which is assessed capability level.
• The successful candidate will be required to undergo yearly capability assessments which may result in pay increases or decreases. A drop in capability in any given assessment period results in 12 month pay protection to allow candidates to retain prior capability level.

• Working in an infrastructure engineering capacity; the role is flexible in terms of technology stack (so any experience in virtualisation technologies like Hyper-V or Cloud Platforms such as M365, Google Cloud Platform, Azure or AWS). Note that knowledge of the current stack used at DfT is not mandatory but you will be expected to transfer your knowledge to technologies used at DfT.
• Significant and demonstrable experience working within a cloud environment; the role is flexible in terms of technology stack (so any experience in virtualisation technologies like Hyper-V or Cloud Platforms such as M365, Google Cloud Platform, Azure or AWS). Note that knowledge of the current stack used at DfT is not mandatory but you will be expected to transfer your knowledge to technologies used at DfT.
• Experience of designing Cloud environments including IaaS, PaaS and Security requirements
• Demonstration of design of processes and automation around Cloud Environment Operations
• Ability to communicate with Business stakeholders around options within the Cloud Platform
• Demonstration of Problem Management capabilities

Interviews are due to take place w/c 1st November 2021.

This interview could be conducted via a video interview, details of which will be provided to you should you be selected for interview.
