Job description

This is a Business Improvement Manager role in the Department for Transport’s (DfT) Group Assurance and Digital Directorate (GAD). The Directorate has responsibility for Corporate Governance, Corporate Security, Digital Service and the Government Legal Department. This role sits within the Business Management team that supports the smooth running of the Directorate.

This is an exciting opportunity to drive change and improvement in multiple arenas: at team level; across the GAD Directorate; throughout the DfT Group; and in influencing the cross-government Digital Data and Technology (DDaT) function. You will utilise your change management, performance management, governance and stakeholder relationship management skills:
 

Responsibilities

Include (but are not limited to):

• Working jointly with the Head of Business Management, you will transform the way in which the Business Management team works, embedding a stakeholder focussed approach supported by dashboards and management information that drive effective conversations to manage risk and gain greater effectiveness and efficiency for the team and for GAD, meeting stakeholder and business needs
• For the GAD Directorate, you will lead on the co-creation and implementation of an effective performance management and reporting framework providing effective upwards visibility on the performance of GAD divisions, enabling effective decisions that improve performance and mitigate risk, and instilling a culture of continuous improvement
• Working in partnership with the Central Digital and Data Office (CDDO) and DDAT leaders and stakeholders across the DfT Group you will co-create and implement an effective performance reporting and governance framework for the Digital Data and Technology (DDaT) function across the DfT Group
• Working with the Chief Technology Officer and co-creating with stakeholders you will facilitate and support a new DfT-wide approach to Technology Governance and Assurance, ensuring that opportunities to join up intelligence, mitigate risk and achieve efficiencies are realised
• You will overhaul reporting and performance monitoring across the directorate: design new processes and dashboards to achieve a step-change in upwards visibility of the performance and efficiency of GAD divisions, providing a single view of directorate performance by drawing together a range of HR, financial, contractual and performance data along with delivery outcomes and audit recommendations to provide actionable insight

About you

To be successful in this role you will be both a leader and a team player, capable of sharing ideas to improve the business unit as well as embracing the ideas of your colleagues and using stakeholder feedback to fuel new ways of working. You will be a progressive thinker with an eye for improvement across all areas you work in, have a passion for performance management and be capable of setting, managing, reporting and successfully delivering KPI’s.

Through strategic planning, and use of quality management techniques you will develop strategies across the business with the view of consistently improving how we work. We encourage a joined up way of working so remaining open minded and thoughtful to other people’s idea’s is key to this role.

• Strong data management and reporting skills with the ability to design and produce visual reporting and dashboarding tools that combine multiple datasets and help stakeholders make informed decisions
• Experience of using strategic planning and key performance indicators to drive a culture of continuous improvement
• Working with colleagues to co-create change, ensuring that stakeholder requirements, user needs and subject matter expert knowledge are understood, and that any tensions are communicated, escalated where appropriate and successfully resolved
