Position Purpose
  • Primarily this role provides support to the UK Environmental, Health and Safety programmes, initiatives and systems in place across Pfizer UK Worldwide Research & Development and Commercial businesses.
  • Responsible for the provision of a high standard of (primarily) technical Health and Safety advice and assistance.
  • Able to work largely independent of direct day-to-day supervision.
  • Sets and adheres to own timelines to ensure delivery of goals as agreed with the Environmental, Health and Safety Manger.
  • Demonstrates strategic and tactical awareness and so influences goals and activities.
Primary Duties
  • Provide advice, guidance, and direction regarding the full range of health and safety matters relevant to current business activities.
  • Act as subject matter expert for agreed specialisms.
  • Contribute to the development, maintenance and review of the UK Environmental, Health and Safety Management system.
  • Formulate and maintain appropriate written policies, procedures, rules, guidance and briefing notes.
  • Lead high-level technical assessments, investigations, audits, inspections, surveys, hygiene monitoring and training. Arrange and coordinate additional specialist assistance where necessary.
  • Participate in active monitoring programmes, supporting where appropriate, the implementation of recommendations
  • Contribute to the formulation of annual Environmental, Health and Safety objectives and targets.
  • Plan, develop and participate in Environmental, Health and Safety audit and inspection programmes.
  • Identify, compile and deliver or oversee training and mentoring programmes.
  • Establish and maintain up-to-date knowledge of legislation, company standards and best practice, communicating changes and developments and coordinating response to ensure compliance and continued professional competence.
  • Ensure Environmental, Health and Safety equipment and services are correctly specified, validated and maintained.
  • Establish and maintain communication links with local and global Pfizer colleagues and external parties.
  • Manage tasks and projects to meet timelines, technical and where appropriate budget requirements.
  • Consult and liaise with relevant parties regarding relevant Environmental, Health and Safety matters, representing the company at external meetings and seminars as directed
  • Support Emergency Preparedness and Business Resilience programmes and respond to emergencies in an effective, timely and competent manner.
  • Act as incident severity assessor and investigation approver, to ensure appropriateness of investigation findings and corrective actions.
  • Involvement in and where appropriate opportunity to lead Environmental, Health and Safety improvement initiatives and programmes.
  • Support the UK Environmental, Health and Safety Governance structure, through attendance at Environmental, Health and Safety Committee meetings, communicating key information and documenting outcomes.
  • Contribute to data analysis and review, including preparation of performance reports to identify trends and continuous improvement opportunities.
  • Compile promotional communications for topical items to be included in the monthly Environmental, Health and Safety communications programme.
  • Maintain a close working relationship with Environmental, Health and Safety delegates and other key departmental contacts and partners.
  • Support customer departments to communicate and consult efficiently on Environmental, Health and Safety matters.
  • Occasional need may arise to travel to one of the other UK locations to provide on-site support if required and deliver environmental, health and safety support to Europe, Middle East, Africa and India regional sites and facilities.
Training, Education and Experience
  • Minimum health and safety qualification - The National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent.
  • Experience of Health and Safety within the pharmaceutical or chemical research and development or industry sector, or a laboratory environment is preferred.
  • Knowledge of environmental, health and safety cultural programmes is desirable.
  • Good communication, presentation and negotiation skills and able to demonstrate these to all levels of the business.
  • Leadership and influencing skills.
  • Good interpersonal and team working skills.
  • Sufficient technical awareness to be highly credible amongst 'technical customers'.
  • Demonstration of involvement in local or site Environmental, Health and Safety improvement initiatives.
