Systems Engineer - Communications

Do you want to design and build systems to provide secure tactical data communications networks for our armed forces? We have an exciting opportunity for a Systems Engineer - Communications based in our site in Christchurch.

As a Systems Engineer you will integrate cutting edge tactical and operational network elements together to create solutions for the customers. You will work on our future projects; developing and delivering military and commercial technologies in the secure defence area.

You could be an experienced communications engineer or have worked on other aspects of IT systems integration, either way this role could be the next step in your development path. The role will provide you with ample opportunities to work with cutting edge technology. Your main responsibilities as a Systems Engineer will involve:

In essence our systems engineers make things work, whether they were intended to or not! You will be asked to do some or all of the following

  • Design of solutions that integrate both commercial, military and bespoke products in order to create solutions that meet the customers' needs
  • Supporting the improvement of the team competencies and skills.
  • Working with customers to support delivered systems and resolve issues
  • Production of documentation to support the product lifecycle capability; such as verification and validation, test, requirements, systems specifications and technical reports
  • Use of knowledge and experience to help predict mitigate any risks that may arise through the design and integration.
  • Ensuring compliance with systems engineering practices
  • Reporting on progress and providing feedback to team members and leadership
  • Planning and estimating development activities

As part of the engineering team you will work closely with colleagues and customers, and support the team and/or project leadership in daily activities. You may also be asked to lead elements of the engineering solution.

Your skills and qualifications:

You might have an IT or engineering degree but equally we will consider relevant non-academic experiences as well as relevant service within our Armed Forces.

  • Sub-System integration of data communications and Networking technologies.
  • Making Systems work to meet customer requirements
  • Translating customer need into technical specifications
  • Networks and Data Communications Modelling techniques and principles
  • Configuration and change management
  • System Engineering tools and processes

Understanding of some of the following:

  • Data Communications and Networking technologies and Systems
  • Security considerations and enforcing capabilities
  • An Engineering development Lifecycle
  • Physical and Electrical Safety, Security and Environmental compliance
  • Product acceptance with customers

What we're looking for in you:

You should have a 'can do' attitude; thriving in a varied, complex, and frequently changing work environment, often with demanding timescales. You will be creative and have a problem-solving mind-set. You will take responsibility for your own work and ownership of your deliverables. You will have strong communications skills and can positively influence junior members of the team.

If you feel you may not have some of these characteristics, we can certainly help you develop them.

Occasional travel to customer sites to support integration/demonstration activities may be required.
