Our Maritime Services Business

We support the Royal Navy and our international clients in the design and manufacture of naval ships and submarines, including their state-of-the-art combat systems and equipment.

As part of the Maritime Services team, you'll play an important part in our supply and production. We design and build a full range of naval ships - from offshore patrol vessels through to giant aircraft carriers. And we provide the Royal Navy with its most advanced and powerful attack submarine fleet. Your expertise will contribute to our customers' capability to fulfil their extensive naval operations globally. Software Engineer

Would you like to play a key role in developing software in support of the Royal Navy? We currently have multiple vacancies for Software Engineers at our site in Portsmouth - Broad Oak.

As a Software Engineer for the Training Services Group (TSG), you will be supporting the subsurface trainer projects, which encompass the provision of simulation systems for both Royal Navy training, integration and test of future Royal Naval sub-surface capabilities. Working in a large software engineering team you will have a high degree of technical freedom and will have excellent opportunities to apply your knowledge to resolve issues and faults associated with installation, commissioning, operation and performance in the software disciplines.

This role is open to Software Engineers of all levels, it could give you the opportunity to keep developing your career into Senior or Principal Positions or give you the opportunity to jump in and push yourself with new technologies in a skilled, dedicated engineering team developing the latest technologies on high profile projects.

 

Your main responsibilities as a Software Engineer will involve:

  • Designing, reviewing, developing, testing, documenting, configuring and delivering software products to the agreed standards and procedures using the specified tools, within schedule and estimates.
  • Resolving complex issues and faults with installation, commissioning, operation and performance of systems
  • Providing technical advice and guidance to other professionals, technician engineers and/or customers, and working with a high degree of technical autonomy.
  • Testing software products sufficiently to ensure software product quality is maintained and minimal or no re-work is required.
  • Investigating and resolving obsolescence issues and problems raised during any stage of the development lifecycle, including software and system integration, qualification, and in-service trials
  • Communicating effectively, identifying early potential risks, seeking clarification and providing feedback to team members and leadership
  • Ensuring that a good working knowledge of, and adherence to, Training Services software related processes, software development practices and product deliverables
  • Supporting team members and leadership with relevant estimation of development activities

 

Your skills and qualifications:

Essential:

We are looking for strong software engineers with a considerable background in implementing in a high-level language.

  • Experience with all phases of the software development lifecycle
  • Experience of UML or similar high-level design methodology
  • Excellent software coding, integration and testing skills
  • Experience of configuration control systems
  • Knowledge and experience with COTS hardware, and interface standards, including networks, switch and router configuration, and WAN protocols

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of C#, C or Ada is desirable, but training can be given.
  • Knowledge of management of deployed systems, security, account management and automated software deployment

 

What we are looking for in you:

You will be a creative and analytical problem solver that is keen to overcome challenges in both design and development as well as software performance assessment. You will also be able to utilise your previous experience, knowledge from lessons learned and analyse factual information to make judgements and assessment on the viability of solutions and evaluate alternatives. The ability to work as part of a team whilst ensuring the quality of your individual work will also be key to this position.

 

Location: Portsmouth - Broad Oak

Salary: Up to £47,000
