Job description

This is a fantastic opportunity to join the MCA as the Emissions Reduction Service Lead within the newly implemented Maritime Future Technologies team. This vital role will lead a team helping to support the wider UK Maritime ambition and ensure the UK leads the way in Maritime Emission Reduction and Autonomous Vessels by 2050.

The Maritime Future Technology Services team is part of the UK Maritime Business Development directorate and team is focussed on supporting the safe implementation of cutting-edge innovation in both Emission Reduction and Automation & Digitisation across the Maritime sector, to ensure regulation is not a barrier to positive change. The team will support the safe implementation of novel technologies and provide assurance across all aspects of the projects which the novel items affect. The team will also support regulatory/policy change by learning from past projects and challenging the approach, scope and methods pertaining to maritime regulation. This will ensure the UK is seen as a worldwide role model, being agile enough to enable the UK to gain a significant share of the economic, environmental and health benefits associated with a technologically advanced and sustainable maritime industry.

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Maritime Future Technology Services, the successful candidate will be the face of this new team for internal and external stakeholders, whilst leading and monitoring the work carried out by the Emissions Reduction function. The role holder will focus on collaborating with industry stakeholders and regulatory functions in order to understand the novel technologies and will oversee the team to ensure that the technology strategy reflects the requirements to achieve the desired objectives, driving progress at all times.

This role will be based in Southampton HQ. At present we are operating a hybrid working approach due to the ongoing Covid-19 situation. Details of this arrangement will be discussed further with your line manager.

There may be a requirement for travel on official duty within the UK and overseas or offshore, which may involve overnight stays away from home. A passport valid for international travel is required.
 

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

- Leading a team of technical experts to deliver on the Emission Reduction focussed elements of the wider UK Maritime Future Technology Services strategy
- Leading the development of the Maritime Future Technology Services team strategy in conjunction with the Assistant Director for Maritime Future Technology Services
- Building strong relationships with key external stakeholders, representing the MCA in delivery of the UK Maritime 2050 strategy
- Leading collaborative work with colleagues/peers across the agency (and wider) to champion change in light of the introduction of novel technologies in the maritime industry
- Working in close collaboration with UK Maritime Services peers to shape the transition of service delivery as novel technologies emerge

This role requires a confident individual with experience of leading technical teams through significant service/operational change in complex, technical environments. You will be an influential leader with a robust technical mindset who is able to keep the team motivated and driven during challenging periods. Your resilient nature means that working in the absence of defined processes and standards is an enjoyable challenge for you.

You have excellent collaboration skills and enjoy influencing others, encouraging them to make the right decisions in line with the business strategy. You’re able to thrive in a demanding role managing differing priorities and meeting deadlines. First class communication skills are pivotal to success in this role and you must be able to work closely with others and express yourself in a confident and concise manner.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) is an executive agency of the United Kingdom working to prevent the loss of lives at sea and is responsible for implementing British and international maritime law and safety policy. It is also responsible for land based search and rescue helicopter operations from 2015.
