Job description

It’s an exciting time to be part of the MCA with this unique opportunity to join the newly implemented Maritime Future Technologies team and play a crucial role in driving forward and supporting the implementation of cutting-edge innovation, in both Emission Reduction and Autonomy, within the Maritime sector.

This new function has been setup to enable the UK to lead the way in Maritime Emission Reduction and Autonomous Vessels by 2050. The Emissions Reduction Technical Specialist will join a dynamic, fast paced, and collaborative team to facilitate the implementation of trials and projects, support regulation updates and drive forward a much-needed change in industry. The MCA will take a prominent role in the international and domestic maritime arenas to enable the sector to prepare for the innovative transformation it faces as it looks to reduce emissions as part of implementing the 2019 Clean Maritime Plan.

Reporting to the Maritime Emissions Reduction Engineering Lead, the successful candidate will directly contribute to achieving the Maritime 2050 Zero Emission Shipping Vision by providing specialist technical expert input. The role holder will work with industry stakeholders including Maritime Shipping Regulatory bodies, ship designers/builders and technology developers in order to investigate and provide advice in relation to novel technologies for new vessels. Attending industry events and collaborating with industry partners will be key to understanding new emission developments which affect the regulatory environment in the UK. The Emissions Reduction Technical Specialist will help build expertise in terms of new fuels in order to get ahead of the curve in the field of Emissions Reduction and Alternative Fuels in the global shipping industry.

This role will be based in Southampton HQ. At present we are operating a hybrid working approach due to the ongoing Covid-19 situation. Details of this arrangement will be discussed further with your line manager.

There will be a requirement for travel on official duty within the UK and overseas or offshore, which may involve overnight stays away from home. A passport valid for international travel is required.
 

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

- Providing expert technical input to support the development, maintenance and delivery of the Maritime Future Technologies programme/work plan and to enable delivery against the plan. This will include advising on prioritisation of where we should focus our efforts/engagement.
- Creating and maintaining strong links with industry/academia to develop an understanding of the technical aspects of the various emerging technology routes and associated risks, and how those risks can best be mitigated both technically and from a regulatory perspective.
- Supporting the development of maritime regulation (within MCA remit) and engagement with other regulators that have an interest to strategically enable the scale uptake of zero emission technologies to support the Government's ambitions set out in the Clean Maritime Plan.
- Providing expert technical input to support development of and provide input to the advisory function with the domestic fleet to support the implementation of low emission solutions.

About You

This role requires a forward thinking individual with a core discipline in naval architecture, marine engineering or a technical specialism with proven experience of working with emerging technologies or experience and understanding of the maritime industry gained from working within a technical capacity in the industry and can demonstrate an understanding of relevant engineering concepts.

You will thrive working in a fast-paced environment enjoying a varied workload. You will excel at meeting challenging deadlines and have the ability to effectively manage time and prioritise workload. You will be technically creative with a problem-solving mindset and a drive to achieve solutions.

Your previous experience of collaborating with various stakeholders will put you in good stead to use your strong communication and influencing skills when discussing developments and changes. You will be a resilient individual, confident in your methods and area of expertise and comfortable making decisions and continuing forward, often in ambiguous situations.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) is an executive agency of the United Kingdom working to prevent the loss of lives at sea and is responsible for implementing British and international maritime law and safety policy. It is also responsible for land based search and rescue helicopter operations from 2015.
