  • The starting salary for a PCSO is £21,808.98. However, for Inner London postings you will also attract a London allowance increasing your salary to £24,508.98 per annum. In addition, you could also be entitled to up to 20% Shift allowance dependant on your shift pattern.

British Transport Police is unique. We are a national police force, working closely with the rail industry to ensure the safety and security of nearly 3 billion passenger journeys and over 100 million tons of freight every year across the rail network throughout Great Britain, including the London Underground. The world in which we work is fast-paced, operationally and commercially demanding, and constantly changing.

Our job is to protect and serve the railway environment and its community, keeping levels of disruption, crime and the fear of crime as low as possible and our police community support officers (PCSOs) are vital to achieving this. 

You will have the same responsibilities that Home Office PCSOs have but focused within a railway environment which will also allow you to enforce BTP Byelaws.  

Neighbourhood policing is as important to BTP as it is to other forces; it’s simply that our neighbourhood looks different to your local town. It is more transient and will pose just as many challenges.

No two days will be the same as you help protect and reassure the passengers, railway staff and retailers within the BTP Community. As well as conducting visible patrols at stations, you’ll confidently deal with a number of tasks, including crowd control; dealing with security threats; undertaking minor crime investigation; working with your community to build and maintain relationships and partnerships, and providing support and assistance to Police Officers.

To rise to all these challenges takes a special kind of person. You’ll need to be resilient with a real flair for customer service. You’ll have the ability to engage with the community and forge strong links with our partner organisations.

PCSOs need to be prepared to work shifts, including weekends and bank holidays.

  • You have been declared bankrupt, have a CCJ or an un-managed IVA.
  • You have tattoos of any kind on your face or neck.

BTP has undertaken a review of Police Staff pensions and as a result of this the Police Staff pension will be changing. The current police staff pension is a Defined Benefit scheme which is administered by the Railways Pension scheme. The new pension scheme which is launching is a Defined Contribution scheme which is administered by Royal London. The new pension scheme is awaiting formal approval and an introductory date is not finalised. The earliest this will be is July 2022.  If you have an queries, please contact the recruitment team.
