Chief Operations Office 

Inmarsat’s Chief Operations Office (COO) plays a vital role managing the services that keep our business running and delivering to our customers. COO consists of 9 functions including: Satellite Operations, Network Operations, Service Assurance, Service Delivery Aviation and Customer Assurance, Service Delivery and Supply Chain, Project Management Office, Global Cyber Security and Group IT

Job Description

Primary role purpose:

One of the core execution priorities in Inmarsat’s strategy is a programme of business simplification we have named Advance 22. It is a programme of interdependent projects targeting a number of the root causes of complexity in our business (total programme budget expected to be greater than $100M over 4 years). We are tackling these as they are barriers and risks to our growth plans.

The intent is to take decisive and bold action to improve the experience for our customers and partners, help us to become more agile and remove some of the day to day frustrations for our people.

Supported by Inmarsat’s Advance 22 Programme team, the Programme Delivery Director is responsible for driving to resolution various issues as they arise across this large transformation programme. They will help the workstream leads to successfully deliver their projects to agreed time, cost and quality.  As part of the solution delivery there may be a need to triage and drive resolution of issues coordinating all the relevant parties in a war-room type fashion.  

The successful candidate will work closely with the appointed external delivery partner (systems integrator) and the internal workstream leads to deliver the expected business outcomes in line with the milestone plan commitments. The role will therefore be required to work closely with the delivery partner and the programme level planning team to ensure that the partner and Inmarsat’s deliverables and responsibilities are well managed and coordinated.

The successful candidate will need a can do attitude and have willingness and flexibility to switch between workstreams to support varying issues. 

Other responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Ability to coordinate and drive multiple technical teams to get to problem resolution
  • Work closely with the delivery partner team to drive collaboration and teamwork across the partner and Inmarsat teams to execute and monitor progress against the plans
  • Ensure that all Inmarsat business and technical delivery teams involved in the programme have clearly defined roles, responsibilities and a clear understanding of their deliverables during problem resolution
  • Organise and chair stakeholder groups to monitor and communicate issues and resolution milestone plans, review and manage risks and review and approve change requests
  • Provide and present regular executive level status reports that include problem resolution progress against key milestones
  • Ensure all key business stakeholders are engaged, understand their roles and responsibilities and are provided with regular updates and communications where relevant
  • Build a strong partnership with the delivery partner and other key suppliers.
  • Build a strong relationship with all key internal stakeholders including Executive team members
  • Provide governance, oversight and support to several concurrent highly visible, business critical projects
  • Hold members of the cross functional teams accountable for their deliverables and where deliverables are off track own the recovery / mitigation plan and the approval of any appropriate resolutions
  • Create and maintain a high-level program plan identifying cross project dependencies
  • Drive collaboration and teamwork to execute the plan and monitor progress against the plan
  • Ensure transparency while carrying out effective and proactive risk, issue & change management

Qualifications

Essential Knowledge and Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree or technical diploma with an IT related field from a recognized post-secondary institution. Other combinations of education and experience may be considered
  • Strong background and experience of working in a senior IT delivery role
  • Extensive experience and successful record of accomplishment in large transformation programmes delivering both significant business change and related IT solutions
  • Delivered major programmes utilising system integrators
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with ability to build relationships with technical, business, and senior/executive management stakeholders
  • Strong influencing and negotiating skills with a demonstrated ability to create ‘win-win’ outcomes
  • Results oriented with a proven ability to drive team engagements in an aggressive and time sensitive environment in a geographically dispersed model
  • Problem solver and able to drive the resolution of technical issues across multiple teams
  • Able to work independently and take a logical and orderly approach to analysing problems, organizing work and planning actions
  • IT background with experience across the systems development life cycle with experience in all project phases – plan, initiate, elaborate, design, build, test, implement
  • Project Management Professional with knowledge and certification of project methods (e.g., PRINCE2, PMP, MSP, Six Sigma) and Agile and/or Lean delivery methodologies (e.g., PMI-ACP, Scrum)
  • In-depth knowledge and experience of all stages of the project lifecycle, from business case development, scoping and mobilisation to design, implementation and deployment of capabilities and benefits realisation

Desirable Knowledge and Skills:

  • Telecommunications experience
  • Order management and provisioning experience
  • Knowledge of ITIL processes and service management
  • Experience of delivering projects using Agile and/or Lean methodologies & best practice.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Project

Qualities and Attributes:

  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams without formal authority to ensure that work is completed accurately and efficiently within established time frame
  • Ability to communicate with diplomacy including sharing ideas and responding to criticism
  • A self-starter who goes above and beyond the expected requirements of the role
  • Works well under pressure and be able to prioritize to meet deadlines and quickly shift to changing priorities
  • Team player attitude is mandatory
  • Curiosity and enthusiasm for talking to end users and understanding their world
