Salary Range: Competitive
Location: Gloucester, with hybrid home/office working
Work Level: 3

IT Developer: An exciting opportunity for a JavaScript Developer has come about in our Gloucester office. Ageas have a Digital Development team to complement our existing Web Services team in Eastleigh. We are currently looking for a JavaScript Developer to be based in Gloucester.

Join us to help develop customer-facing websites, applications and internal systems so that our customers can get peace of mind with the right insurance cover for their homes, holidays, wheels and pets and our colleagues can make life easy when it's time to make a claim.

Main Responsibilities as IT Developer:
To work closely with your Scrum team communicating with your Product Owner, Scrum Master, Testers and other Developers, to produce competitive, robust applications.

This means you will be designing new functionality, suggesting enhancements, tackling technical debt and live issues, providing estimates, writing code, creating unit tests, implementing changes, setting your goals as a team and ensuring that you meet them. Our products range from simple web services to React front-ends to fully architected end-to-end systems. Some are traditional server-hosted products and others are cloud-based so there is plenty of opportunity to stretch your comfort zone.

We're also committed to doing the right thing for our customers, so everything that we do is centred on their fair treatment - it's one of the first things we encourage you to learn.

That sounds like a lot to take on, but don't worry, we're all in it together! Coaching and learning are part of the team's DNA, so you'll be able to help others and get the help you need, just by asking. And curiosity will get you a long way - if you are naturally inquisitive, pro-active about finding out more, confident to try things out and keen to deliver to a high standard, you'll fit right in.

During a typical month, you will:

  • Write code in Java or Javascript (or both) to implement required changes
  • Learn something new and/or coach and help team mates on good practice development techniques, architectural decisions, analysis, coding, testing
  • Research better ways to do things
  • Help with work planning; fully understand requirements and the expected outcomes, and break them down into manageable chunks
  • Participate in daily catch-ups; provide honest updates about progress towards agreed goals, what happened yesterday, what's planned for today and whether anything is in the way
  • Suggest areas to help the team evolve and improve productivity and where IT can assist in meeting business objectives and requirements
  • Provide support for releases including the production of release notes as well as assist in rectifying any live issues

Skills and experience you need as IT Developer

  • Good understanding of JavaScript (ES2015 / ES6)
  • Experience coding in React and/or Node
  • Knowledge of how to work with REST API's
  • Solid understanding of Front End and Back End development
  • Effective analytical skills, taking a methodical approach to problem solving
  • Good knowledge of web design, development, architecture and standards (including coding for accessibility)
  • Proactive and self-organised with the flexibility to adapt to changing priorities
  • Strong team working and collaboration skills (communication is critical)
  • A positive approach to challenges, enthusiasm to tackle new technology and ability to take ownership

Knowledge of the following is desirable but not essential:

  • Any other JS Frameworks
  • Unit Testing
  • Agile and Scrum methodologies
  • MS Azure and MS Azure DevOps
  • Microservice Architecture
  • CI/CD build approach
  • Docker
  • Helm
  • Kubernetes

Here are some of the benefits you can enjoy within the IT Developer role based in Gloucester:

  • A competitive pension for which Ageas will pay twice the amount.
  • Generous amount of holidays with the option to buy up to 5 additional days.
  • Annual Salary review.
