Our Submarines Business

Our Submarines business has been safely delivering world class submarines to the UK Royal Navy for more than a century.

The Astute class will equip the Royal Navy with its largest and most capable generation of attack submarines. We are responsible for the design, build, test and commissioning of these state-of-the-art vessels. In total, seven boats will make up the fleet, each weighing a mighty 7,400 tonnes.

Dreadnought is the successor to the Vanguard class of nuclear deterrent submarines. We will deliver four submarines to the Royal Navy, with the first submarine entering service in the early 2030s. Dreadnought is widely considered to be one of the world's most complex engineering challenges.

Lead Cost Project Controller

Would you like the opportunity to look at the beginning of the lifecycle of the submarine and be part of a new programme in the early phases of development? We currently have a vacancy for a Lead Cost Project Controller at our site in Barrow in Furness.

As a Lead Cost Project Controller, you will manage the Planning, Monitoring and Control processes at the inception of a complex project, supporting a number of key stakeholders across the business, providing a key role with respect to budgets, costs and forecasting.

This is a great time to join the programme as you will have the opportunity to influence how is developed and shaped. You will also work with a range of cross-functional teams enabling you to gain further exposure across the business.

Your main responsibilities as a Lead Cost Project Controller will involve:

  • Embedding and running quality controls for the programme from a cost perspective
  • Collating and analysing programme level summaries
  • Support to the monthly and quarterly cost reviews
  • Using SAP to run reports and assess outputs
  • Liaising with business leads and budget owners to provide support, e.g. maintaining and challenging the cost and commitment estimates
  • Monitoring adherence to processes, ensuring quality inputs are received in line with programme deadlines
  • Analysing monthly and quarterly data to understand performance and improve future forecasting
  • Making sure processes are standardised across all major programmes

Your skills and qualifications:

  • Previous experience within project management
  • Cost and budgeting experience
  • Experience with either EVM or experience with EAC
  • They ability to manage processes and demonstrate excellent attention to detail
  • Good Excel skill, such such as Pivot Tables, Visualisation of data, graphs etc

You should have excellent communication skills to be able to interact with a wide range of stakeholders in the business across all levels. You should also have the ability to provide support and advice to those who might not be confident within costing. You should work well in a team and have excellent organisational skills.
