Job Description

Primary role purpose:

  • As a part of Inmarsat’s Chief Operations Office (COO) plays a vital role managing the services that keep our business running and delivering to our customers. COO consists of 9 functions including: Satellite Operations, Network Operations, Service Assurance, Service Delivery Aviation and Customer Assurance, Service Delivery and Supply Chain, Project Management Office, Global Cyber Security and Group IT
  • The Cloud Network Infrastructure (CNI) provides operation support on mission critical environment. As part of Inmarsat’s continuous development, Inmarsat now offer on Cloud Computing infrastructure on prem cloud services based on VMware and OpenStack and in public cloud with AWS.
  • The role will be responsible for supporting and troubleshooting the infrastructure, deploy new project and standard BAU activities for our internal customers. The successful candidate will be required to support level 3 escalated tickets as well as work with internal development teams on future designs and solutions.
  • The role will require the successful candidate to interact directly with customer technical teams to help resolve and improve services and with the various suppliers to manage the incidents and problems. The role will be responsible for the day-to-day operations (adding users, scale virtual environment, patching/upgrading). Value point for the candidate ability to create design documents, and, in case MoP (Manual of Procedure).
  • To support the Inmarsat Core Network Cloud Infrastructure the candidate needs to have base coding capabilities for automate the BAU activities.
  • Also needs the Linux Knowledge (RHEL and Ubuntu), Windows Environment, networking and storage skills.
  • The role is to ensure that the customer attains a complete service provided by Inmarsat with little or no downtime as practically possible and attain the SLA that is guaranteed by Inmarsat.
  • Without the correct support and role, customers would be unable to communicate with our satellites creating a critical service outage.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Troubleshooting and resolving problems for level 3 escalated tickets. To monitor the case queue in Service Now for the CNI team to ensure all tickets are dealt with quickly and efficiently.
  • Supporting root cause analysis of recurring issues which may require detailed scrutiny of large volumes of log files
  • Working with internal Core Network Platform Team to resolve possible issues. 
  • Support deployment of new project with automation, orchestration and provisioning.
  • Provide out of hours support to the NOC as part of the on-call operations engineering team rota.
  • To solve problems and provide work arounds when necessary.
  • Ensuring all infrastructure devices are licensed and working in optimal condition.
  • To use the test environment and lab to test new releases of software and templates released by CTO and testing possible patch/updates.
  • Day to day tasks of following up and monitoring customer status for ongoing cases.
  • To create where possible using automation, for example running python scripts, ansible, puppet and standard bash scripting.
  • Staying current with system and product information, changes and updates
  • Other duties as required by the line manager

Qualifications

Essential Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong background in network routing (CCNA)
  • A good knowledge of Linux operating systems, for example RHEL Base, Ubuntu,
  • Understanding of network concepts (LANs and WANs)
  • Understanding the SDx concept (Software Define)
  • Strong oral and written communication skills with the ability to present ideas and improvements in an effective and persuasive manner
  • A practical, hands-on approach to problem solving with the ability to work effectively under pressure
  • Self-motivated, willing to take responsibility and work with minimum supervision
  • Self-motivated to learn new technologies and increase personal skillsets.
  • International Travel may be required for short periods of time.
  • You will be confident in your own knowledge/abilities and able to take strategic risks when needed
  • Base Storage Experience.
  • Base knowledge with BGP (EBGP, IBGP) and OSPF.
  • Base knowledge of microservice products such as Docker, containerisation, Kubernetes.
  • Programming experience in language such as Python and shell scripting.
  • Microsoft office products for general office work including Teams, Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint etc.
  • To be able to conduct initial troubleshooting and diagnostics on all enquiries
  • Ability to assimilate information and respond accordingly
  • VMware and other Virtualization Technologies (OpenStack, KVM)
  • AWS Hands on
  • Hardware/server support experience (HP, Cisco, IBM, Dell)

Desirable Knowledge and Skills:

  • Have working technical knowledge of:
  • Understanding SDx technologies
  • AZURE, GCP and other possible public Cloud knowledge
  • Juniper Junos switches and routers
  • Ability to communicate across all levels of management and customer base.
  • Firewall experience such as Checkpoint, Palo Alto, Cisco ASA
  • API, Rest, Curl scripting
  • Understanding ITIL and Agile Frameworks
  • Wireless Networking technologies such as WiFi® and Bluetooth®
  • Awareness of the various Inmarsat services and products
