Job Details

Frontier Economics is an economics consultancy that tackles the big questions facing governments, businesses and society. We help our clients to analyse and understand their markets and to formulate strategies based on sound economics. The methods and models we use are often complex, but our advice is always succinct, clear and honest

We are actively recruiting experienced Economists who also have experience in Data Science. We are looking for talented team players, with specialised skills and valuable expertise, who have a desire to advance their career path.

Your responsibilities as a Data Scientist will include:

  • Accurately delivering work, helping project managers determine the type of analysis that will best answer our clients’ questions, and delivering this yourself and with the help of more junior colleagues.
  • Engaging professionally with clients; actively listening and understanding their perspective and needs.
  • Applying relevant core micro theory and empirical techniques (for example econometrics, optimisation, GIS analysis, agent-based models, and machine learning techniques) across a range of projects.
  • Delivering high quality technical work using tools such as R and Python to handle datasets, perform analysis, and visualise results.
  • Identifying key results from analysis (that will prove or disprove key hypotheses).
  • Adapting written work to the target audience in terms of style and level of information.
  • Supporting junior staff and peers in preparing well structured, clear, client deliverables.
  • Helping to develop the quantitative capabilities of our Energy team and the firm more widely by learning about new techniques and providing information and training to colleagues.

The successful candidate will be experienced in using scripting language such as R or Python and will ideally have energy market experience. A familiarity with dispatch models would be beneficial, but not essential.

Although this role will predominantly focus on Energy related projects, we strongly encourage all of our Economists to work across Frontier’s different practice areas – that is, to be ‘fungible’. Fungibility benefits both individuals and the firm as a whole, and we believe it is core to maintaining our values and our culture

In addition to stimulating and thought-provoking project work, we offer numerous benefits to support you inside and outside of work. All employees have access to numerous Learning & Development opportunities including ongoing Career Development Reviews with the support of an allocated Mentor.

We understand the importance of work/life balance and offer flexible working arrangements. Our hybrid working model means we expect most people to combine coming into the office with working remotely, either from home or elsewhere. We are encouraging a 60:40 split either way, with a full-time colleague typically being in the office 2-3 days a week. How you split your time will depend on the meetings in your diary, projects you may be working on, the time of the role etc - we want you to be able to embrace the flexibility while thinking about what works best for The Company, Your clients and You. In addition we provide 28 days annual leave with the option to purchase an additional 10.

Frontier is entirely owned by its employees. As Shareholders, we encourage everyone to put forward their views. Not only do we influence how the company is run but we choose to distribute as much of our profits as is prudently possible through bonuses. In addition we offer a highly rewarding salary.

If you would like to become part of our team, we are interested in meeting candidates who can demonstrate:

  • Analysis & Problem solving skills: Economists who can accurately scope and deliver modelling and data science work.
  • Communication skills: Consultants who can communicate successfully and professionally to clients and colleagues.
  • Work Management skills: Organised individuals who understand their own and colleagues’ roles on projects consistently deliver work scoped by others.
  • Client relationship skills: An awareness of how to work professionally with clients in a range of situations.
  • Contribution to Frontier values: A genuine interest in identifying and developing opportunities to make Frontier a better place to work.

All candidates must have a post-graduate degree with an Economics or data science focus in additional to at least four years relevant work experience.

Frontier is an Economic Consultancy with a difference. From day one our goal was simple – to create a company that approached economics with imagination.

Founded in 1999, we are entirely employee owned so everyone contributes to the culture and success. Our Economists work on the most topical issues affecting business and society. As the world evolves around us, the problems we solve change constantly.
