Job description

As a Statistical Officer, you will provide support to your team in the production of high-quality statistics to be published by the Department and used by policy makers in their decisions. You will use your data and statistical skills to explain and communicate analysis, while working collaboratively with policymakers, other statisticians, modellers, economists, and social researchers in the Department.

We are looking for driven and motivated individuals who are looking to gain expert knowledge within statistics and data within the Department for Transport.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities may include but are not limited to

  • Completing analysis to inform customers and ensure that policy options are underpinned by the available statistics and analysis.
  • Interpreting and summarising analysis accurately whilst making use of the different resources available such as Excel, R and SQL.
  • Assisting with the production of Government Statistics publications.
  • Working to seek and embed innovative ways to disseminate data, such as automation, dashboards and new publication formats.
  • Working proactively with colleagues in analysis, policy and with stakeholders to define their statistical needs and how they can be met.

About you

To be successful, you will need to be someone who has experience of obtaining and using appropriate data. This could also include combining data sources to generate more insightful data.

You have experience of being involved with quality checks required to be performed on data and use these to assess data suitability.

You have the ability to select and use appropriate statistical and analytical coding techniques and can apply statistical understanding to draw conclusions based on evidence. You are comfortable with working with data and can use data visualisation techniques to present and communicate data findings.

Additional information

A minimum of 40% of your working time should be spent at your principal workplace, although requirements to attend other locations for official business, or carry out detached duty in another DfT workplace, will also count towards this level of attendance.

Qualifications

To be eligible to join the Government statistical service you should have one of the following:

  • A first- or second-class honours degree in a numerate subject (2:2 minimum for Statistical Officer) containing at least 25% taught statistical content (e.g. Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Sciences, Business Studies, Psychology, Geography, or similar)
  • A higher degree, e.g. an MSc or PhD, in a subject containing formal statistical training (e.g. Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Sciences, Business Studies, Data Science, Psychology, Geography or similar)
  • Have worked in a statistical or data science field for a minimum of two years and are able to demonstrate Continuous Professional Development in applying statistics or data science at the same level as a foundation degree or Higher National Diploma (level five)
  • Have achieved or on track to achieve a level 4 apprenticeship including at least 2 years in a statistical/data analysis field in government and are able to demonstrate continuous professional development in statistics/data analysis

Please note: candidates may apply in their final year of study while they are still awaiting their qualification result, however, formal contracts can only be offered upon confirmation of the achievement of the relevant qualification.
