Job Title: Java Developer
Contract Type: Permanent, Part Time, Full Time, Job Share option available
Salary Range: £45,000 - £55,000 depending on experience
Location: #smartworking, hybrid working and flexible approach to location.

Java Developers: At Ageas we are looking for developers who wants to make a difference, to do it right and do it together with their team. You'll be part of a team helping us to develop internal and external systems, websites, APIs and service layers so that our customers can get peace of mind with the right insurance cover for their homes, wheels, and pets and so our staff can make life easy when it's time to make a claim.As a Java Developer, you will be designing new functionality, suggesting enhancements and tackling technical debt. This involves understanding and clarifying business requirements, providing estimates, producing design documents, refining ideas with Architecture and other developers, writing code, creating automated tests, supporting your work as it goes through rigorous user testing and implementing changes, all within project deadlines.

Skills and experience you need as a Java Developer:

  • A solid background in web development with extensive knowledge in Java and experience of Spring Boot to create web APIs
  • Experience of creating unit tests
  • Exposure to software management tools GIT, Git Hub or Subversion.
  • Webservices (RESTful/SOAP/JSON etc.)
  • Effective analytical skills, taking a methodical approach to problem solving
  • Good knowledge of web design, development, architecture and standards (including coding for accessibility)
  • Broad understanding of front and back-end development
  • Proactive and self-organised with the flexibility to adapt to changing priorities
  • Strong team working and collaboration skills (communication is critical)
  • A positive approach to challenges, enthusiasm to tackle new technology and ability to take ownership
  • Some knowledge of agile methodology and practices is beneficial

You will also support live applications and we are looking for someone who naturally suggests incremental improvements whether it is to the processes followed during the software delivery lifecycle (SDLC), architectural design decisions or tools. While you may favour back end development, we would encourage you to stretch your skills to be involved with both front end and back end work to ensure the team can deliver the diverse work in our remit.

Our products range from simple web services to web front ends to full end-to-end systems. Some are traditional server-hosted products and others are cloud-based so there is plenty of opportunity to stretch your comfort zone. Our back ends are mainly written in Java and our front ends are mainly written using React.

You will be working closely with the business, analysts and testers and will be involved at all stages of the development lifecycle from the initial idea to the delivery. You will be an active participant in daily catch-ups where you will provide honest updates about progress towards agreed goals, what happened yesterday, what's planned for today and whether anything is in the way.
