Job summary

Imperial College London are looking for an experienced communications professional to join the Information Communication Technology (ICT) Communications team. We are searching for a highly motivated, skilled, and passionate Communications Officer to help raise awareness of ICT’s digital ambitions. You will be able to deliver a broad variety of compelling communication activities and campaigns to a wide range of customers across the College, including students, staff, and guests.

Working as part of ICT, you will be integral in supporting our internal departmental communications efforts, implementing creative and engaging communications to help build a positive and inclusive culture. You will also be responsible for creating on brand content to share on high profile College wide communication channels, that celebrates ICT’s successes, generates excitement, raises awareness, increases engagement, and builds support for ICT’s services, activities, and campaigns.

You will be familiar with content management systems and can demonstrate a practical mix of excellent copywriting and editorial skills. You can get inventive by creating and shaping rich media content such as videos, web/social graphics, interactive documents and more to share across a variety of digital channels.

Duties and responsibilities

You will play a key role in the planning and implementation of internal and external communications activities that align with ICT’s strategy and our Communications Strategic Approach. Delivering promotional campaigns, targeted communications, working with ICT teams to create communication plans, copywriting, designing printed and online materials; and creating content for website and social media activities are typical examples of the various elements of this exciting role.

It is important that you are an independent thinker as you will need to be highly organised, creative, analytical, and proactive. You will be able to prioritise a demanding workload, always working accurately, have excellent written skills and experience of working with content management systems and social platforms. You will be a point of contact for queries for ICT staff, providing communications advice and guidance as needed.

Essential requirements

  • Experience of working in internal communications in a complex organisation with diverse internal audiences.
  • Experience of supporting innovative and appropriate communications solutions that help individuals understand and engage in activities.
  • Demonstrable knowledge and understanding of effective mechanisms for communications, engagement, and participation.
  • Proven knowledge and experience in the use and development of digital and social media as part of integrated communications and marketing activity.
  • Demonstrable experience of planning and developing content for digital channels (e.g., website, email and newsletters, social media) for a medium or large organisation.
  • Demonstrable experience with leading digital content management, digital analytics and reporting tools and systems. 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to cooperate, communicate and work effectively alongside senior colleagues as well as in a team and with other colleagues.
  • Knowledge of how to target stakeholder groups, understand their interests and motivations and communicate with them effectively.
  • Ability to produce other types of content, including images, audio, and video 
  • Excellent written, proofing and editing skills and ability to convey messages in a clear and compelling way, tailored according to the audience.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with ability to communicate effectively with staff and students at all levels and from different backgrounds.
  • High level of personal organisation and ability to work independently and make decisions with minimal supervision, using judgement and discretion.

The position is a full-time, open-ended contract. You will have the opportunity to work within a large department at one of the top universities in the world. You will work closely with the Communications Lead who has an ever-expanding scope to accommodate the fast-moving pace of working within an IT Department.
