Job Description

Primary role purpose:

Inmarsat requires a self-motivated individual to lead systems design, modelling and analysis for all aspects of advanced satellite communications and navigation systems, identifying key concepts and capabilities for further investigation and engineering development, feeding in to business development and sales activities.

Working as part of the Strategic Programmes team within the Global Government BU this role is a key part in expanding and enhancing Inmarsat’s systems capabilities and programme delivery.  The incumbent will join our team of engineers in City Road, London to lead analysis and planning for future space-based capabilities, including dedicated GNSS and SBAS capabilities. Additionally, the incumbent will perform modelling and analysis for various strategic programmes across the business unit to verify that the proposed architectures and service concepts deliver the specified performances.

The systems engineer will also contribute to the development of specifications for new communications or navigation systems concepts inclusive of space and ground segments, whilst supporting the delivery of proposals to major government agencies and organisations.

Qualifications

Key Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the modelling activities across the G2 Strategic Programmes using programmes such as STK.
  • Work as part of a team to perform mission and system level design for missions ranging from LEO to GEO.
  • Prepare technical recommendations for next-level up management on space and ground segment designs.
  • Identify programmatic risks, assumptions, issues and dependencies to enable business management to assess and define long-term engineering programme developments.
  • Develop and validate key specifications and architectures for navigation systems via functional block diagrams, interface definitions, system process flows and definitions.
  • Manage and/or perform trade-off studies to evaluate architecture implementation options
  • Contribute analysis and modelling of reliability, availability, maintainability aspects (RAMS) for the selected architecture options.
  • Validate architectures and service concepts using a Model Based System Engineering (MBSE) approaches implemented via standard systems engineering tools, testbed emulations and/or simulations.

Essential Knowledge, Qualifications & Skills:

  • Candidate must be UK National or citizen of a 5-Eyes nation.
  • Degree in a numerate subject, Physics or Engineering or Maths preferable – or equivalent industrial experience instead.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Satellite Systems in both the civil and military domains.
  • Strong experience with projects or large systems engineering programmes within industry in roles equivalent to Systems Engineer/Systems Architect.
  • Knowledge and understanding of MBSE and proficient in the use of engineering tools such as Enterprise Architect, DOORS or similar.
  • Proven capabilities to develop new software tools using e.g. Microsoft Excel, MATLAB or other standard packages and to be able to take over and further develop existing software tools to support key systems analysis tasks.
  • Good knowledge of using STK (System Tool Kit) or equivalent software.
  • Good knowledge of MATLAB/Simulink packages.
  • Excellent written, reporting and communications skills with people at all levels of the organization.
  • A passionate desire to take on challenging systems analysis and modelling tasks and deliver innovative solutions in a timely manner.

Desirable Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge and understanding of Satellite Navigation Systems.
  • Knowledge and understanding of spacecraft design and spacecraft development (AIT) methodologies.
  • Proven innovation in the development of systems engineering modelling and analysis.
  • Proficiency in the use of Systems Modelling Language (SysML) or similar.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the testing aspects for systems engineering testbed emulations including the associated test equipment and test results correlation.
  • Ability to present a clear, well set out vision or conceptual view of systems solutions, architectures or services.
  • Familiarity with ECSS engineering standards.
  • Holding a higher degree in an Aerospace-related subject.
  • Demonstrating objective, rational and multidisciplinary thinking.
  • Ability to contribute to programme proposals covering engineering solutions for major government or commercial entities.
