EY Reconnect Programme

At EY we’re building the workplace of the future – smarter, more inclusive, more dynamic and more flexible – motivated by a sense of purpose.
To do this we want to attract brilliant people from different backgrounds and create a diverse, inclusive workplace where everyone feels like they belong; a place where you feel valued, recognised, and able to be your truest self at work.

What is EY Reconnect?

It’s a 12-week programme for anyone who’s taken a career break between two and 10 years, and it’s a fully supported opportunity for you to reconnect with your previous experience while applying the skills you’ve learned while you’ve been away. You’ll benefit from specialised inductions and coaching as part of a peer group of fellow returners within EY.

We have regular start dates for the programme but, if they don’t work for you, we’re happy to discuss a more flexible arrangement at interview stage. For example, many previous participants felt they reconnected with their professional lives more quickly in a full-time programme, but then continued with us part-time in permanent roles.

You’ll join client teams in one of our many offices around the UK and in one of these business areas:

–          Advisory

–          Assurance

–          People Services

–          Tax

–          Transactions

Between the level of support from us and the peer group you’ll be part of; the invigorating challenges you’ll be given; and the diverse environment of belonging you’ll experience, you can feel the Reconnect effect too.

What background and experience do you need?

EY Reconnect is for people who’ve worked at manager level or above in professional services, but it’s also open to anyone from related industries including consultancy, financial services, and technology.

It’s about more than just your technical experience, though. EY Reconnect is an opportunity to join an inclusive and diverse workplace where we encourage creativity and flexibility. It’s not just something we talk about – the skills you’ve acquired from your career break will be celebrated and valued as much as those from your professional CV.

Why EY?

We’ve been running EY Reconnect for four years and there are already many talented people who’ve come through the programme from different backgrounds and are now thriving in our business.

We also pride ourselves on being one of the UK’s most inclusive working cultures. Our recent accreditations include Sunday Times Top 25 Best Big Companies, Times Top 50 Employers for Women, Top 10 Employers for Working Families, Stonewall Top Employer, and Business in the Community’s Best Employers for Race.

We also have a range of well-established, thriving employee networks across the business, and are recognised as a Mental Health First Aid Champion and a Social Mobility Champion.

What do others say about it?

“A great thing about the programme was that a group of us returned to work together. To have that support network and be surrounded by people who understood what we were going through was a huge advantage. I never felt like an outsider.” – Louise. Manager, Financial Services Advisory

“Raising kids did wonders for my negotiation skills, and now I’m more effective at work. EY really understand how people develop away from the workplace as well as when they’re in it.” – Kemi. Manager, Financial Services Transactions

“I realised that I don’t want to just go to work every day for a job, I want a professional career. And I wouldn’t have been able to do that without an initiative like EY’s Reconnect programme.” – Rosemary. Career returner and former EY Reconnect alumnus

Ever wondered how it would feel to find a job that’s just ‘made for you’? Hanika shares how EY Reconnect has led her to her perfect match – in a place she never thought to look.

Building confidence

“I thought it would be easy. Coming out of a stressful management role at a major bank to start a family, I felt excited to begin my career break. In reality, it was only a couple of months before boredom crept in. Raising a child is a wonderful thing, but part of me longed to experience the buzz of my career again.

“That’s when a friend told me about EY Reconnect. I’d previously worked in trading, financial data and banking, but not consulting. Would it work for me? Could I do it? Would my child be OK? I felt nervous and I didn’t know the answers. But I decided it was worth a try.”

A supportive community

“The people I met during the interview process couldn’t h

ave been more lovely or supportive. When I cancelled my first interview because I couldn’t get childcare, they were so understanding. The nicest surprise, though, was learning that my interviewer was just back from maternity leave herself – her second child the same age as mine.

“She put my fears entirely to rest. I came away reassured that I could do this – and equipped with lots of practical tips from one working mum to another!”

Putting experience to good use

“To my great delight, I was offered a place on the 12-week Reconnect programme in EY’s Transactions business area. What really impressed me was the care they put into matching my experience and interests to the right role.

“Transactions is a huge practice area, but they saw real potential for me in a team specialising in complex securities valuations. Truth be told, I didn’t even know what this was! I soon realised it was the perfect match. It’s combined the valuation skills I learned as a trader, the client-facing skills I learned in financial data sales, and industry knowledge I learned in banking.”

The Reconnect effect

“Nine months later, I can only describe my career as a dream come true. I learn something new every day. I’m trusted to get my work done where, and when, I need to. I can now leave the office at 5pm to pick up my child – without feeling judged. I’m a more focused, productive employee because of it. Best of all, I can see a fulfilling, exciting career ahead of me at EY.

“I’m back to being my positive self again – something my family is grateful for! It’s rejuvenated my love for the time I get to spend at home with them. I now look forward to evenings and weekends – we have more fun than ever. And when I walk through the office lobby on Monday mornings, I’m smiling.”

Career returner, Kemi, was able to use her skills straight away and make a big impact. It’s not just her colleagues and clients who’ve benefitted, but her family, too.

Knowing when you’re ready

kemi1 - Case Study for EY

“My career has always been very important to me, and although I loved my time at home with my children, I felt the time was right to get back into a rewarding career.”

Kemi worked at Deloitte and Goldman Sachs before taking a career break to care for her two daughters. She joined EY in the Transactions practice as part of the EY Reconnect programme – a 12-week initiative providing a route back to business for people returning from time out of the workplace.

“I made the decision to take time off while my children were young. But I didn’t want this to impair my long-term career goals, especially as I felt raising two children had made me even more skilled in areas like negotiation and time management!”

New learning opportunities

“When I came across the EY Reconnect programme, it ticked all the boxes. It would give me exposure to interesting client work but within a programme that addressed the challenges of coming back to work after a break.”

And the expectations of the programme quickly became a reality for Kemi.

“On joining the programme, I was enthusiastic to get going and add value to my team. Luckily, I’ve been given the opportunity to do just that, while taking advantage of the exceptional learning and training EY offers.

“For example, the career coaching sessions have been very illuminating, with valuable knowledge-sharing on the best ways to approach this new stage of my career.”

Flexibility to succeed

EY’s flexible and supportive approach was also a key factor in Kemi’s decision to join the programme.

“Everyone I’ve encountered has been really positive and interested in the programme, and always keen to have a coffee and a chat. In my opinion, EY’s approach to workplace flexibility is empowering for employees and shows a modern organisation that listens to its people.”

Programmes such as EY Reconnect encourage and empower people to refocus on their careers after a break, according to Kemi.

“There are a lot of well-qualified, experienced people – especially women – who feel marginalised from the workplace following a career break.

“EY Reconnect and similar initiatives promote diversity in the workplace, which we know benefits everyone – it’s a win-win situation.”

Overcoming challenges

Of course, returning to work after a long career break can bring some challenges along the way. So what’s been the biggest challenge for Kemi to overcome?

“Realising my kids are alright without me! Because they definitely are. I have a supportive husband and great childcare in place, and this programme has let me see that I can manage a busy career and home life.

“Now, I feel I’m providing an important example to my daughters when I go to work each morning.”
