Case Study:

Katie Willison, Marketing Communications ExecutiveBalfour Beatty

Returning to work after maternity leave is daunting for any new mum so it’s important to have a supportive employer. As much as I love being a mum, I had worked hard over the years to establish my career so I knew I wanted go back to work.

I returned to work earlier than anticipated, so Balfour Beatty allowed me to be part-time for a few months so that I could get use to the juggling act of working and motherhood.

I have an understanding Manager who allows me to manage my parental commitments without issue and because of this I have been able to balance my working life and my home life –despite a busy and challenging full time career and young child.

Another key benefit for me is that I have also been able to purchase for tax-free childcare vouchers through Balfour Beatty, saving me around £77per month on nursery fees.

Jennifer Langsdon, Health & Safety AdministratorBalfour Beatty

Since joining Balfour Beatty, I have been able to adapt my working hours to suit family commitments, such as dental or doctor’s appointments and school events. This has been a positive change in our lives due to being able to spend essential caring time with them.

My fiancé does round the clock shift work, so being able to start my working day later some days and earlier on others enables one of us to be at home with our child before or after school with minimal time being alone at home. Also, as a young teenager, he is not yet old enough to take care of himself when he is ill for a full working day, so having the ability to work from home on these rare occasions he is too ill to attend school is very useful.

As I have transferred departments, both my line managers have supported my work-life balance by ensuring I do not work over my contracted hours, and have prompted me when my own time management has been side-lined for productivity. This has been a learning curve for me due to ingrained cultures from previous employment within the full time care and education sector.

Michaela Halfacre, HSE Manager

My transfer into full-time motherhood and part-time professionalism has been well supported right from the outset by Balfour Beatty.

Through all stages of my pregnancy I felt that any potential risk as a result of my role, requiring regular construction site visits, was managed appropriately without me as a worker or expectant mum feeling compromised or equally unduly restricted.

This support continued following the birth of my fighting fit and lively twin girls and extended to my husband (another Balfour Beatty employee), who was allowed to change his working hours to allow an earlier start and be home in time for the “witching hour” and bed.

Balfour Beatty has continued to support us both independently, allowing me to choose the dates and times that I work and support each other’s work commitments in line with our childcare arrangements.

As a part-time worker I have become more focused on what I need to achieve and how I can best achieve my deliverables and continue my career, this and my excellent childcare arrangements has made me feel at ease when at work allowing me to focus on my professional work without compromise.
