This is our way of giving something back to those who devote their time, energy and expertise to the  success of our customers. Everyone benefits.

Flexible working is one of many ways that Hilti seeks to ensure that it offers a work-life balance that works for employees and works for the business. We offer flexible working options to suit different stages in your life and aim to support you to find the right balance between work and home life.

Flexible working options at Hilti can take many forms, including but not limited to job sharing, part-time working, annualised hours, compressed hours, flexi-time, term-time working, working from home, staggered hours, career breaks/sabbaticals, time off in lieu and flexible shift-working.

We offer paid time off to support different situations in your life, including bereavementstudy leavemedical appointments and emergency days. There is also the option to purchase up to five additional days’ leave each year and employees are now entitled to one additional day of paid leave when getting married or moving to a new house.

Some of the policies we offer to support working parents include:

Parental Leave

We offer a range of paid family leave options that are more generous than the statutory approach including:

  • 18 weeks’ full maternity pay and up to 2 months’ pay as a return to work bonus
  • 2 weeks paternity leave at full pay
  • Equal shared parental leave pay

Fertility Treatment Leave

During this emotionally stressful time, we would like to support our employees undergoing fertility treatments. Female employees will be entitled to up to 4 days of special paid leave to cover the first full cycle of extraction and multiple implantations. This applies to up to 3 cycles of fertility treatment. Partners will be entitled to 2 days of special paid leave during the key times through the final stages of the treatment programme, to give their partner support. This applies up to 3 cycles of fertility treatment.

Premature Birth Leave

We recognise that sometimes babies can be born prematurely which means you will require additional time in the hospital. Under those circumstances, employees will be entitled to an additional 2 weeks of paid leave following maternity/paternity leave to allow them to spend more time with the baby. Premature birth is a birth which takes place before the start of 37th week of pregnancy.

Gifts for new parents

New children are welcomed into the Hilti family with a gift via From Babies with Love.

From Babies with Love is a pioneering social enterprise that donates 100% of its profits to orphaned or abandoned children. Every penny of profit from the ethically-sourced baby gift goes to vulnerable children around the world.  The support is delivered in several forms including to individual children, to nursery schools to help toddlers receive their early years education and to establish schools and Child Friendly Spaces with social support and education for unaccompanied and refugee children, many of whom have experienced highly traumatic situations. The ethos and foundation of From Babies with Love aligns with our own values here at Hilti to support and help people to build better futures through education.

All new mums and dads, regardless of team or department, receive a From Babies with Love gift. The gift will contain a handwritten greeting card, gift bundle which includes an organic unisex body suit, hat, bib and muslin swaddle.

The Sunday Times 100 Best Companies to work for 2020

Case Study:

Sam Lane, Sales Director

hilti case study 1

Why did you want to join Hilti Sam?

I always like to say that I didn’t choose the construction industry, but that it chose me!

I was looking for a Finance position at the time and I’d heard a lot about what a great company Hilti was to work for in terms of their culture and values, but I didn’t know too much about the company itself.

After doing some further research, I liked what I saw, and I always remember asking my husband ‘Have you heard of Hilti?’ and his response was ‘Yes – you have to work for them!’.

My initial role was a great introduction to the Hilti Finance team’s way of working. At the end of my first year in the department, we became the Regional Hub for E1, which meant that as a team we were growing and represented more opportunities for even more growth!

How did you develop into your role as Sales Director?

I initially joined Hilti as a Commercial Accountant back in 2010 and then progressed into a Finance Business Partner role where I partnered with the Sales team. From here I held positions as a Regional Manager and a Segment Manager for the Energy and Industry division, whilst also managing to fit in a maternity leave! Then, early in 2018 I was promoted to Sales Director for the North Division.

At Hilti, we have a structured development process called SMD (Strategic Manpower Development). I can honestly say that I have taken the time and care to invest in my own SMD discussions and my personal development, because it really does matter! I have always been open and honest about my aspirations and taken on board feedback around my development areas – all to help broaden my skillset.

As you can see through the roles that I have undertaken, I have taken side steps to move forward and progress to exactly where I wanted to be. I have trusted in the process and been patient, as its important to ensure that you stay focused on your current position and perform in order to move on.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

The main thing I enjoy about my job is spending time with our people and seeing them develop through our organisation.

Also, I don’t think there is such a thing as a typical day but there is certainly a lot of variety. The main things I cover are meetings with our key customers to drive engagement topics such as; ON!Track and Big Fleet. Then there’s the people development aspect, whether that be recruitment / capacity planning, or coaching and development of our existing team. Personally, I find that most of the smaller topics feed into these two main blocks in some way.

What surprises you most about your job?

Truthfully, nothing surprises me. Having been here 8 years and in several different departments, I can honestly say I have seen or been involved in lots of different topics. One thing for certain about Hilti is change, so that we can ensure we are always driving innovation in the way that we do things and through the topics we are discussing with our customers. For me, this is what keeps it exciting!

What would you say to other women considering a career at Hilti?

I would say the same thing that I would say to anyone. Hilti shows that they are an organisation that really supports development, whilst driving to be the best we can be. How many organisations do you know where people have moved from Finance to Sales to Marketing?  If you want to be part of a great workplace that is always striving to have the best people around you, then come join us!

Dawn Leitch, a Regional Manager for Scotland

case study 2

Why did you want to join Hilti Dawn?

I decided to originally apply for an Account Manager role at Hilti back in 2013, as I wanted a change from what I was doing (working as an IT Account Manager for an education company) – and what could be more challenging than joining an industry I knew nothing about!

Fortunately, I got the job as an Account Manager and after 18 months, I progressed into my current role as Regional Manager.

How did you develop into a Regional Manager role?

Here at Hilti, we have a Strategic Development process in place, and this is what helped me to understand both my strengths and development areas. As a result this supported me with the knowledge and tools I needed to get to this point in my career.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

The main thing I like about my job is the variety it offers and the fact that no two days are the same. One day I can be on field rides with my team or out on sites, the next I can be visiting our top  customers, recruiting new team members and generally supporting the development of my team.

Personally, it’s the daily challenges and fluidity of my diary that I love.

Also, I like the fact that I’m not just a people manager – I am also part of the team driving business forward. I get to meet people, talk to customers and drive the development of my team as well as the opportunity to be hands-on.

What surprises you most about your job?

I would say it’s often how nice people are that surprises me. Having been in sales for so many years, you can come across some less than savoury characters, but there are so many nice people within the company as well as just genuinely lovely customers.

What would you say to other women considering a career at Hilti?

Hilti is an amazing place to work and whilst the construction industry is often a male dominated environment, I’ve never considered that to be an issue for me. I knew nothing about the industry when I joined, so I would say that people shouldn’t let that be a barrier for them – it’s a really supportive culture at Hilti.
