Case Study:

Amelia Dowty, Talent Acquisition Lead, JLL UK

I joined JLL in 2014 and took on a full-time role leading on Emerging Talent Acquisition. The role demanded visiting University campuses, running events day and night and frequently involved lots of travel. While I loved the energy and pace of the role, I wasn’t sure that it would be the best lifestyle option for returning to when I came back from maternity leave in early 2018 after the birth of my son. I was fortunate enough to benefit from JLL’s generous enhanced maternity package due to my length of service, and, after a discussion with my line manager, was offered the chance to return to JLL in a totally new role. I was keen to maintain more of a work-life balance than I had previously, so I requested a flexible working arrangement. We went through a couple of revisions and negotiations, but it was granted, and I now work a compressed working week and take Fridays at home.

I think it is difficult, as a working parent, to ever really feel as though you are getting the balance just right (either you feel work or home life isn’t getting your full attention). JLL have made it easier to transition back to working life and are compassionate and flexible when the inevitable illness-related nursery exclusion strikes, and I need to stay at home or leave early for pick up. It’s about give and take; we are such an agile business that this approach is the only sensible way for working parents to be able to juggle their priorities.  It has worked well, and our Working Parents network is also available to support others in the same situation. We also launched a Maternity Returners programme in 2018 and I was fortunate enough to be part the pilot. Finally, I have been able to be supported by an executive coach who has helped me with my new role, my transition back to work and into life as a working mum.
