LNER

Why LNER?

We go beyond. For everyone. Our vision is to be the most loved, progressive and responsible way to travel for generations to come. Now we’re looking for the people who can deliver this, every day.

Since we took over on the East Coast mainline, we’ve been changing the face of rail travel. Our new Azuma train has brought faster journey times, more space and greater reliability. Our exciting plans to embrace new ideas, experiences, backgrounds and ambitions make this the ideal time to join.

Bringing passion. Being bold. Always caring. Owning it. They’re the values that make us LNER.

Diversity and inclusion

We are passionate about creating a diverse and inclusive workforce, representative of the communities we serve and are creating ways to inspire diverse talent to join LNER.

In practice, this means working with schools, supporting training programmes, creating opportunities through work placements and apprenticeships, making sure our recruitment processes are free from bias, developing talent, offering career progression and creating a great place to work for all.

Our Inclusion Network and Inclusion Representatives are working with us to make our culture more inclusive. We have invested in a programme of inclusion training tailored to the needs of each role and each year arrange a calendar of events to raise awareness and support all aspects of diversity, including workshops through Women in Rail and regional Pride celebrations.

We are working with experts such as Inclusive Employers, Working Families and Stonewall to make our processes, policies and procedures more inclusive and are committed to making progress each year in the Inclusive Employers benchmark.

Ultimately, we want to ensure that everyone at LNER feels able to be themselves, can fulfil their potential and have a career they can truly be proud.

Developing our people

We are focused on creating a learning culture, to support our people to be the best they can be at work by providing them with the tools and resources to navigate their development and career journey.

Our development framework helps people to identify growth opportunities for both development within role and/or looking to move to their next role.

We help our people to take control of their own development, performance and careers. To do that, we make it as easy as possible for people to identify their strengths, development opportunities, career aspirations and match this to the appropriate development.

Investing in current and future skills requirements we support the development of existing employees and attract diverse talent into the industry through our innovative apprenticeship programme. We are proud to be included on the Register of Apprenticeship Training Providers (RoATP) as an employer-provider.

 Health & wellbeing

To create a culture where our people can perform at their best, the physical health and mental wellbeing of our people is of paramount importance to us.

Our in-house team of clinical experts and health and wellbeing specialists promote health awareness at work and at home through clinic appointments, drop-in surgeries, monthly health related topics and a range of mobile Apps.

With 1 in 4 people suffering from mental ill health at any given time, we are committed to reducing the stigma associated with mental ill health to enable our people, customers and communities to speak out about their experiences and seek support.

In 2019 we signed the Time to Change pledge, to demonstrate our commitment to changing the way we think and act about mental health in the workplace and are proud to have trained over 100 colleagues to be mental health first aiders through the accredited Mental Health First Aid England programme.

To encourage our people to live healthier, happier, more well-rested lives we have invested in Headspace subscriptions for everyone and provide access to an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) which provides counselling, legal advice and services to help them navigate events in their work and personal lives.
