Life at Phoenix

We know that an inclusive business makes us stronger. That’s why we’ve introduced various initiatives to create a friendly, welcoming and fair work environment. We know that diverse organisations perform better. Bringing together people with different perspectives, ideas and experiences always leads to better discussions, decisions and results for everyone.

Diversity and inclusion<

At Phoenix we support the development of a range of employee groups, such as our Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT), Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) and working parents networks. Creating an environment where everyone feels welcome and appreciated for their unique contribution helps us retain great people. Most importantly of all we’re doing it because, simply, it’s the right thing to do.

Women in finance

In 2016, Phoenix were proud to be amongst the first 72 firms to sign the Women in Finance Charter. Our targets include a commitment to have 30 of our Top 100 roles held by females by the end of 2018, and to increase the number of women in our succession pipeline to 40%. We believe achieving these goals will lead to a reduction in our gender pay gap, the third of our Charter commitments.

Job title: Actuarial Technician

When did you start working at Phoenix: September 2010

Whatt attracted you to Phoenix Group as an employer?

As a student, new in the actuarial world, I was attracted by the benefit package including the pay, benefits, pension contribution and medical insurance that Phoenix Group offered. It was fairly competitive at that time.

I was very impressed by its beautiful location. By end of the assessment day I knew Phoenix Group values its employees and I was sure that the company that values its employees would always have a strong future. I liked the idea of flexible working, friendly and honest work environment, sports club and of course the free lunches. My overall experience of interview process was very positive. Every person I interacted with during the day left me with positive impression. I thought I can fit in this culture.

What is it about your work here, the department or the working environment that makes you stay at Phoenix Group?

Circumstances in my personal life turned demanding a few years ago. Phoenix Group and the people here (team members and most of my line managers) have been really supportive. I don’t think I would have been able to survive full time working if it was not for Phoenix Group’s flexible working policy. I feel proud working for Phoenix knowing it goes out of its way to support charitable causes and contributing to the society in a positive way.

Apart from the varied interesting work that we do, in my current team I am involved in Bonus calculation process and resolving customer’s queries. I love how we always do our best to be fair to customers.

After the most recent acquisition announcement, I feel the work is only going to get more interesting and I would have more opportunity to progress my career with Phoenix Group.

What makes Phoenix Group such a great place to work?

Phoenix company work culture and the people here. I enjoy coming into work every morning and leave feeling happy by end of each (I mean most day). Recently I am amazingly proud of how we are promoting Working women, Parenting network, LGBT support network etc.

Name:Georgina Bale

Job title: HR Services Manager

When did you start working at Phoenix: June 2017

What first attracted you to Phoenix Group as an employer?

Flexibility without a doubt is what first attracted me to Phoenix.

Early in 2017 my family and I relocated from London to Shropshire having decided to leave City life behind us and head for the countryside. As a result, I was looking for a new job. I’d seen the role advertised on the Phoenix website but had ruled the opportunity out; I had a three year old son attending nursery in Shropshire and I couldn’t see how I was going to make the full time hours work alongside a four motorway journey and nursery opening hours. However, I was encouraged not to rule out the opportunity by an agency who suggested that they would be open to consider flexible working for the right candidate.

From my early interactions with Phoenix, I was honest and open about the fact that my childcare commitments meant I would need to work flexibly or with reduced hours. At every stage of the recruitment process this was met with supportive nods, understanding and a clear commitment from my (now) Manager, Heather that this wasn’t an issue that together we could make it work. For my first 12 weeks, I didn’t have an agreed working pattern. Heather was keen to ensure that I established a routine that gave me the balance I needed between my home and work life, so I spent these weeks testing different routes, varying combinations of start and leave times before we agreed on a working pattern.

The flexibility I was promised in my interview has materialised. I work full time, but my work day is structured so I start my working day earlier to enable an early finish time and I work from home every Wednesday.

What is it about your work here, the department or the working environment that makes you stay at Phoenix Group?

There are so many reasons why I choose to stay at Phoenix; the challenging and interesting work that comes my way, the opportunity to work with great people, the amazing facilities on offer to employees and of course the continuing flexibility.

What makes Phoenix Group such a great place to work?

Without a doubt the people.

Whether it’s working with my team, colleagues in the wider HR function or business the people at Phoenix mean that I walk through the door with a smile each morning!

Everyone was so supportive when I joined, whether it was answering my many questions, reminding me of people’s names or sharing strategies for enjoying the amazing free lunches, someone was always there to help.

Those early working relationships have continued to grow and I’ve made some great friends! We all work hard and support one another to achieve our shared goals, but we do it with a smile and some great humour along the way.
