Five different automotive brands. Group Functions. Trade specialists. Volkswagen Group UK has a unique culture, built on diversity, difference and a friendly rivalry that inspires us all. Across our brands, we learn, encourage and regularly challenge each other to think differently. We’re all together driven.
One in every five cars sold in the UK comes from the Volkswagen Group UK. When you take a look at our brands – Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT, ŠKODA and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles- that’s no surprise. Operating out of Milton Keynes, we sell approximately 500,00 vehicles a year, with a market share of almost 20%.
However, what really sets us apart is how we work. Volkswagen Group UK is a customer focused, nimble and commercially astute operation. Our people have a true passion for what they do, a genuine desire to go further for customers and to achieve real momentum in their careers.
We’re passionate about brands, about the automotive industry and about delivering great customer experiences. But at the same time, we’ve all got a life outside work too. We’re a flexible organisation that understands life doesn’t fit into the standard 9-5. We embrace flexible working arrangements and job-shares. We also know that people value different things, so along with a competitive salary, car and discretionary bonus, we offer a wide range of flexible benefits to suit you and your lifestyle.
How long have you worked in the business for?
What does your job involve?
Providing legal advice to all of our brands and functions. I specialise primarily in IT contracts, large outsourcing contracts, Brexit and GDPR.
How does working life fit alongside your home life?
My job is very full-on and very full-time! However, I almost always make it home to put the children to bed. I can then log on later if needed, or just keep an eye on emails on my device if I want to. With technology, I am always contactable, wherever I am. It is a two-way street though; I am always willing to put in the hours required, because I know this flexibility is reciprocated.
What support did you receive from Volkswagen Group to help you as a working mum?
There is a no-permission culture, allowing me to fit work around sports day/concerts etc. I also work from home once a week, which allows me to take my children to their respective school/preschool. It is worth saying, this isn’t a privilege extended only to mothers (or fathers); whatever your reason for needing flexibility, your circumstances will be considered.
What can a mum considering a role at Volkswagen Group expect?
If you are performing well at work and getting the job done, then there’s plenty of flexibility on hours to allow you to accommodate family commitments. Expect to be able to attend those important sports days and special assemblies without being made to feel guilty.
“Recent surveys show only 16% of employees in our sector are women and redressing that balance is hugely important. If you have diversity in your team, you have a more balanced approach, make better decisions, and satisfy more customers. It’s something we’re working on actively at Volkswagen Group and I’m delighted we’re starting to see the number of women in management climb in the right direction. We still have some way to go, but I believe a concentrated focus on attracting women into our organisation, developing their talents and supporting them to flourish is fundamental to changing things for the better.”
