London saw biggest drop in commuting during early pandemic

London saw biggest fall in commuting to work between 2019 and 2022, but Scotland witnessed the biggest percentage increase in homeworking, according to ONS figures.

London and the South East saw the biggest drops in commuting to work between the end of 2019 and March 2022, according to new statistics from the Office for National Statistics.

The number of people who live locally, but commute to work or who commute across regions fell by 30.1% or 1.4 million in London, followed by the South East (down 21.8% or 775,000 people), Scotland (down 21.2% or 505,000 people) and the North West (down 20.2% or 627,000 people). However, in some regions the number of people travelling outside their region for work increased – up 3.1% in the East of England, 1.7% in the West Midlands and up 1.5% in Scotland. The ONS says the increased figures could be down to seasonal work.

In the December 2019-March 2022 period, homeworking in the UK more than doubled from 4.7 million to 9.9 million people. The biggest percentage increases in homeworking were in Scotland (up 203.5%) and the smallest percentage increase was in Northern Ireland (up 56.4%). The number of people travelling to work fell  by 19.7%. The regions with the highest percentage of homeworkers in January to March 2022 were London (up 37%, the South East (up 36.9%) and the East of England (up 31.1%). The regions with the lowest percentage of homeworkers were Northern Ireland (up 16.4%), the North East (up 22.4%) and Yorkshire and The Humber (up 26.2%).

Meanwhile, new research shows only workers in the manufacturing sector have seen their pay rise in line with inflation over the past year, according to data from Adzuna. Salaries in manufacturing rose on average by 11% between 2021 and 2022. HR and recruitment also saw high wage growth, with the average salary rising by 9.4%.
