Navigating the career change storm

Workingmums.co.uk Careers Week aims to give you a range of different ideas to consider if you are looking to change career or job, including some practical advice.

Light Bulb Moment, Ideas and Innovation

What do you want to do job-wise and how will it fit around family life? Having children is a whirlwind, stirring up all sorts of thoughts and emotions amid the total exhaustion. Often you can go around and around in your mind for years the whole issue of finding a way of working that works around family life. That can mean switching jobs, careers, setting up on your own and all sorts.

It can help to get as many ideas as possible and to hear from others who have done it. There are many ideas that you won’t even have thought about. That’s definitely the case with self employment. A lot of parents want the flexibility of self-employment, but are not sure what they can do to bring in a regular income.

That’s where workingmums.co.uk Careers Week comes in. Last week we showcased a broad range of different ideas, careers and advice to provide people with food for thought. There was information on the latest trends when it comes to job search, from how to get around AI systems that might throw out your cv or application to how to use social media platforms to promote yourself. There was a session on how AI is changing the workplace and how you can stay ahead and integrate genAI in your job. There were also a whole range of sessions with different employers or organisations aiming to ease your journey into different careers.

British Transport Police spoke about the jobs they have on offer as Police Officers and Police Community Support Officers and how they are keen to attract more women. The force became the first in the UK to proactively advertise part-time job opportunities. BAE Systems and AWE spoke about the jobs they have available, about their family friendly benefits and how they are keen to attract more women. Codebar spoke about how they are offering free one to one coaching to help under-represented groups into technology careers where they can earn more money. And Realise did a webinar on their free skills bootcamps that help people into careers in the early years sector.

The week ended with a chat with Tech Pixies founder Joy Foster about how the organisation helps women into careers in digital marketing. All of this was backed up with recorded sessions from other employers and lots of links to advice we have posted recently on careers advice.

There was lots to consider. Career switches are all the rage and there is a lot of talk about transferable skills, but what people need is practical advice and concrete ways of getting into different types of areas. We hope Careers Week will give you some useful ideas.
