The Liberal Democrats leader Nick Clegg is to propose a £50m summer school scheme for disadvantaged children transitioning from primary to secondary school.
At the Lib Dems conference today, Clegg is to propose a voluntary two-week scheme targeted at around 100,000 disadvantaged children on free school meals to ensure they don’t fall behind during the summer holidays. Secondary schools will play a role in identifying those likely to benefit.
Research shows the summer before children start secondary school is a key time when some students can fall behind in their studies. The catch-up scheme is expected to start next year and classes could be run by secondary schools or voluntary groups.
