The number of women out of work and looking for a job is the highest for over 20 years, according to figures from the Office for National Statistics.
They show the number increased by 50,000 to 1.02 million in the three months leading to July. Unemployment among men fell by 58,000. There are fears that women will be hardest hit by the latest phase in the recession, after men were most affected in the early stages.
Analysts say this is because they are more likely to work in the public sector and do part-time work which men are now competing for due to the recession.
The number of part-time workers, rose by 166,000. There are now 7.93 million part-time workers in the UK, the highest figure since comparable records began in 1992.
There are also likely to be more women looking for a job as stay at home mothers are forced into the workplace after their partners lose work.
