Parents to lose £436 a year in childcare, claims thinktank

Cuts to childcare support will cost the average family £436 a year and may mean many working mums are forced to give up their jobs, a thinktank has warned.

Cuts to childcare support will cost the average family £436 a year and may mean many working mums are forced to give up their jobs, a thinktank has warned.

The Resolution Foundation has published figures for how much childcare support parents will lose in different parts of the country following the Government’s decision to cut the percentage of childcare costs recoverable through the working tax credit system from 80% to 70% in April.

The cuts are expected to affect some 450,000 families. In some parts of London parents will lose up to £1,300 with the average figure being £600 a year.

Resolution Foundation chief executive Gavin Kelly said many parents may still be unaware of the changes and that many working mums will find work no longer pays.
