Report calls for action on the gig economy

New report calls for action to give gig workers a greater say in their working lives, access to training and a wage that takes into account additional expenses.

Gig workers need a greater voice in the design of the platforms they work for, a minimum wage which takes into account additional expenses and access to training, according to a new report.

The Better Work in the Gig Economy report from digital think tank Doteveryone is based on in-depth research with gig workers from around the country. It says that for many gig workers gig working apps have become a trap, requiring them to commit ever-more time to the platforms in order to make the work a financially viable option, and it calls for policy change and platform redesign that champion three pillars of better work: financial security, dignity and dreams.

With regard to financial security it says the Government should create a minimum gig wage which accounts for the unavoidable costs of being a platform worker. It adds that platforms should provide greater data transparency to help workers navigate their finances, plan for the future and show customers where their money goes.

When it comes to dignity, the report says companies should create governance structures that give workers a greater voice in the design of platforms they work for and that platforms should also provide access to human interaction to solve workers’ questions or help them seek redress. The report states: “We’re calling for gig companies to create new governance structures that give workers a greater voice in how apps are designed and enable them to co-design features that directly affect them and their work.”

On training, the report says the Government’s National Retraining Scheme, set up to address the expected impacts of automation on the economy, should be adapted to provide the kind of support that gig workers need. It has developed Help Hotspots which provide a broad range of drop-in support for people in locations and at times that fit into gig workers’ daily lives. This includes information about finances, equipment repairs, training and well being.
