National single parent charity, Gingerbread is calling for single parents to give their views on work and what they want from it as part of a major research project.

The work which is being funded by the Big Lottery aims to collate the views of single parents’ attitude to work including what experiences they’ve had in employment and details about their ideal job.

According to the charity, previous research looking at single parents’ employment has mainly focused on barriers but this project is asking about parents’ career aspirations.

The findings will be used to look at whether the work needs of single parents differ from other parents, what type of employment support best suits single parents and whether career ambitions are similar for all parents.

The charity’s researchers want to hear from all single parents whether or not they are currently working.

One in four is now a single parent. Research by Gingerbread further shows that single parent employment has climbed steadily in recent years to 57%. And once children are 12 or over, single parents’ employment rate is similar to, or higher than, the employment rate for mothers in couples (71% of single parents whose child is 12-15 are in work).

Yet according to the charity single parents earn less. Single parents’ mean hourly wage is £9.71 per hour, compared with £11.19 for couple mothers. The median weekly income for working single parent families is £404.52, compared with £618.44 for couple families with one worker.

Those taking part have the chance to win £50 worth of high street shopping vouchers. To find out more or to complete the survey go to: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/BGL5KZG
