Unpaid parental leave extended
The right to unpaid parental leave has been extended from 13 to 18 weeks from today in accordance with an EU directive.
The leave is 18 weeks per parent per child under five [or for adopted children up to their fifth year since adoption] and applies to parents who have been employed for a year or over. It is in addition to maternity, paternity or adoption leave.
For children eligible for disability living allowance, the leave can be taken up until the child’s 18th birthday. The leave must be taken in one-week blocks and no more than four weeks leave can be taken in any one year.
The extension was due to come in last year, but the UK government delayed it for a year.
