Warning over tax credit deadline

HMRC is reminding people to update them about any changes to hours that might affect their tax credit status.

HMRC has reminded those who receive tax credits that they have a week left to update the tax office about any reduction in their working hours since the pandemic or risk being fined.

A temporary rule rolled out during the coronavirus crisis meant anyone in receipt of the benefit who was working reduced hours because of the pandemic did not need to tell HMRC.

However, the rules returned to normal on November 25th and changes must be reported within one month. Those who fail to report any changes could be hit with a £300 fine, with this increasing by up to £60 a day if left unpaid.

Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s director general for customer services, has said it is “vital that Working Tax Credit claimants update HMRC with their working hours if they have reduced and won’t return to their normal level.”

Claimants can check how many hours they need to work on GOV.UK.  Any changes can be easily reported online on GOV.UK.
