Entrepreneur Penny Power has some tips for small business owners for the Christmas period.
Business owners and self-employed workers are being urged to make time for rest, recuperation and quality family time over the Christmas holiday period or risk facing burnout and poor mental health.
The warning was issued by businesswoman and entrepreneur Penny Power who has personal experience of burnout. As a mother of three grown-up children who has built up and sold businesses, she knows first hand the pressure that business owners and self-employed people can face over the Christmas period – from meeting deadlines and client demands to juggling family commitments and social invitations.
Whilst today there is greater awareness of self-care and mental health in the workplace, Penny is concerned that owners of small businesses, which make up 95% of the business sector, remain largely forgotten in these discussions and often do not take time out from work when others are enjoying the Christmas festivities.
“Letting go of business thoughts and stresses is virtually impossible for business owners, but learning to rest your mind as a business owner is as critical as learning to rest as a top sports person,” says Penny. “We cannot improve and progress in business if we don’t allow our minds to rest.”
“The mind is the most critical part of our being, so ensuring it is looked after is just as important as the practical side of business. Through personal experience, I understand and know the dangers of overdoing it and becoming exhausted when building a business; low moods turning into depression, anxious moments turning into anxiety and tiredness turning into clinical exhaustion.
The majority of over-stressed business owners are not ‘clinically ill’, but need to find a way to have a stronger mind to manage the way business and life is making them feel,” says Penny, who is author of the forthcoming book Business is Personal.
In the book, Penny describes the ups and downs of her own business life and how this affected her mental well being. Having had time to reflect on this now, she is keen to pass on what she has learned.
“It takes an incredible amount of emotional and mental strength to embark on the adventure of business, and no one is immune to its effects – from the millennial to the corporate refugee and the employed workforce,” explains Penny. “That’s why it is so important for business owners to understand how they can build the life they want in business, not the life and business that ‘others’ lead – created by the overuse and dependence on social media and the inevitable compare and despair outcomes of this new world we find ourselves in,” she adds.
