Third WM People podcast: 4-day week, D & I and sickness

The third episode of the WM People podcast is out and covers the 4-day week, the D & I backlash and how sympathetic workplaces are about child sickness.

The third WMPeople.co.uk podcast is up and focuses on the 4-Day Week trial, Diversity and Inclusion and what to do when your kids are sick.

The podcast was hosted by Ben Falk, editor of workingdads.co.uk, and Mandy Garner, editor of workingmums.co.uk ad workingwise.co.uk.

It begins with a discussion of the 4-day week following a report last week analysing the results of a six-month trial. Sixty-one British employers took part and 92% said they would continue with the 4-day week as a result. The trial involved the employers agreeing to reduce their working week by 20%, but to continue to pay staff working less than full time the same wages. The podcast discussed how different employers interpreted the brief in different ways according to the sector they worked in as well as criticism of it.

The section on Diversity and Inclusion started from criticism of unconscious bias training by the outgoing head of the Institute for Race Relations who said that much of it is box ticking and doesn’t address structural issues. The discussion ranged from the D & I backlash and tick box D & I to how D & I has grown to embrace many types of difference, whether some aspects of D & I are losing ground to new initiatives and whether people find it more uncomfortable to talk about some aspects of D & I.

The final section focused on how to negotiate with your boss about children’s sickness. It follows a pop-up poll on workingmums.co.uk about sickness which found a third of parents said their employer was unsympathetic about their children’s sickness and that 72% of parents have recently been into work although they were sick.
