‘Women could miss out on promotion due to hybrid working’

New research from the Chartered Management Institute finds that male workers are more likely to be in the office after Covid and that homeworkers are treated detrimentally to office workers.

Men are more likely to go back into the office when working in a hybrid manner and women may be at risk of missing out on promotions and other benefits, according to a study by the Chartered Management Institute [CMI].

Its research has found that male managers are significantly more likely than female managers to currently mostly/completely work from the office (48% vs 38%) whereas female managers are significantly more likely than male managers to work mostly/completely work from home (41% vs 34%).

Two in five (40%) managers in organisations with employees who must work exclusively from the workplace due to the nature of their role claim to have witnessed or heard from others views or behaviour that demonstrate inequality exists between those who can work flexibly in terms of location and those who can’t.

The CMI says that there is a risk that men benefit more from the social bonds of being in the office that give them differential opportunities such as access to stretch projects, influence, promotions and such other benefits and opportunities that may not be available (or less available) to those who work out of the office.

There have long been concerns that hybrid working if not done equally by men and women would favour male career progression, given that women are still often the primary carer in their families and more likely to need to work from home some of the week. Experts argue that employers who introduce hybrid working should monitor carefully the gendered impact of policies and career progression.
