Women’s role in economic and social development is on the agenda at the G20 summit in Seoul later this week.
Women’s empowerment will be part of development issues discussed at the summit, but South Korean MP Shin Nakyun will also hold a forum at the G20 Assembly to push for women’s issues, including gender equality and the need to promote women’s economic development, to have a separate main agenda item.
Nakyun says women are “the most powerful drivers of economic growth”.
Women’s economic development is slowly rising up the world agenda. In July this year, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution to establish the UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), which brings together several existing organisations, including UNIFEM.
UNIFEM says Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s appointment of Michelle Bachelet as the first Executive Director of UN Women “demonstrates the importance that the UN gives to gender equality and the empowerment of women”.
