Women who are suffering from work burnout are more likely to turn to comfort and binge eating, according to a Finnish study.
The study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found that women who were overtasked at work were more likely to eat when they felt stressed and to binge eat.
"Those experiencing burnout may be more vulnerable to emotional eating and uncontrolled eating and have a hindered ability to make changes in their eating behaviour," writes Nina Nevanpera of the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health, who led the study.
"We recommend that burnout should be treated first and that burnout and eating behaviour should be evaluated in obesity treatment."
The research involved 230 women ages 30 to 55 who were part of a clinical trial looking at healthy lifestyle changes. All were surveyed about their working and eating habits.
Some 22 percent of the women suffered some degree of work burnout and were more likely to eat for emotional reasons or bing eat. Women who did not have job burnout at the study’s start were likely to cut down on binge eating over the course of a year, but the burnout group did not.
The women who suffered burnout were less likely, however to be overweight. The researchers speculated that this may be because generally they had a higher education level, but said that such eating habits should be discouraged because they were unhealthy.

It’s no coincidence that the majority of my clients have work related stress and binge eating problems.
