What are the top 10 in-demand jobs in 2024?

New year, new job, right? According to recruitment specialist Hays over half [51%] of people intend to look for a new job this year. And half [47%] of those not planning to change jobs said they could be tempted by a higher pay packet and improved benefits.

Its Salary & Recruiting Trends guide 2024 is based on a survey of over 14,000 professionals and employers. Hays has also put together a top 10 of in-demand jobs based on what employers are saying and on jobs listing.

They include qualified social workers [average salary £32,667 with two years’ experience], cyber security managers [average salary £83,950] and energy/carbon managers [average salary £61,250]. Social workers top the list, followed by multi-skilled maintenance engineers [average salary £47,200], quantity surveyors [average salary £51,083 (intermediate)], cyber security managers, energy/carbon managers, engineering project manager [average salary £61,750], SEN teaching assistant [average salary £23,000 for experienced assistants], credit controllers[average salary £28,375], newly qualified accountants [average salary £49,458 in a large organisation] and supplier relationship manager [average salary £58,600].

Simon Winfield, CEO of Hays UK and Ireland, said: “The roles featured on our list are at the top of employers wish lists up and down the country as many struggle not only to attract staff, but also to retain them due to high competition for skills.

“If you’re thinking about a move in 2024 – it’s good news as employers are much more willing to hire based on skills and aptitude, rather than just experience and qualifications. When applying for roles and in an interview setting, make sure to highlight the skills you’ve gained and how you might develop them further – it doesn’t matter if you can’t tick every box on a job description.”
